The JD website list two sizes of R4 tires for the 3XXX series. Other than size and price, what is the difference?

27x8.5-15 6PR front R4Ind. 2 pos
43x16-20 4PR Rear R4 Ind. 2 pos $329.00

25x8.5-14 6PR Front R4 Ind. 2 pos
15_19.5 6PR Rear R4 Ind.2 Pos $192.00

I went with these because they are bigger. I chose the R4's over the R1's because they don't tear up the dirt roads, gravel and grass as much and they have better floatation. For these goals then the larger the better because you have less weight/area.
The 3x20's have plenty of torque for the larger set. You do sacrifice some traction over the R1's of course and you need to be a bit more carefull about sharp sticks pointing up, etc...

You also get a bit more stability due to the wider tires.

So the larger of the two R4 options gets you
1. a wider footprint
2. more floation
3. a bit softer ride
4. a little more speed, if that's a issue
5. they look better

Hi radman,

This is a pic of the "new" R4's... larger, less space between the treads for the reasons aforementioned...

I think there is some tradeoff on traction to go with these vs. the other R4's... mine are like slicks when packed with mud or clay... of course everyone with the other R4's has the identical complaint, so...

BloomingtonMike has the other R4's on his, and a nice links to pics of his 3320 which show those treads very well.

The Marathoner R4s seem to fill up with mud just like the Standard R4s but they also seem to eject it well from the treads. Also note that the Marathoner R4s are only 4-ply in the rear as opposed to the Standard R4s, which are 6-ply. Not as rugged of a tire but it may be more forgiving on a lawn and provide for a softer ride as stated. I have the Marathoner R4s and I'm glad I went with them.

Here are some pictures and their descriptions.
