JD Square Balers and other options

I've played with that already, no noticable difference. I think they may be out of time a bit.

Hey I know TX is long way but I have seen another 348 with 1800 bales on the monitor for 16. It was clean as well but I guess it should have been.

That would be the next thing I would setup.

I'm a former JD 336 owner and my experience didn't match the other comments

You must have been very unlucky, have always heard very good reports about JD balers

This year was my 4th year with a 336, before that it was an IH 440. We do about 10k of square bales a year. It does well. It'll take a big wad of windrow and not bog down. I get the occansional missed tie but that usually revolves around the twine swap over.
We are upgrading to a model 40 kicker this winter, the 38 had a bad design with rot of the top of hyrdaulic resviror. Overall I like the baler, but I'm not as happy with the kicker. That old IH kicker would launch bales, I could throw them over the wagon if I wanted. The JD just kind of lobbes them up.

A JD hydraulic thrower when working right can fill a second wagon towed behind the first wagon. Pump wear and clogged suction screens can lead to poor tossing power.

JD 328 - 16,938
JD 338 - 18657
JD 348 - 20,545

I am pretty much convinced I am going to buy a used square baler, but looking at the prices - why is the 348 so much more money?

I am thinking twine. People around here seem to like wire, but the horse people seem to prefer twine - easier to work with.

I am not going to be making my living wit it, but I won't want a pile of junk either.

Advice?

Less than 2 years later and the MSRP has gone up $2K+ on each.

OUCH.. ouch! No wonder there's a crowd whenever there's a good used JD baler for sale at auction!

You'll need to charge more for those small squares. I've heard it said that more folk's are moving away from big rounds and small squares and into big squares.

And the horse people are OK with the 3x3's (smaller big squares) 'cause they can fit 'em in their smaller, Toyota's and Dakota's and Colorado's, etc.

Peel a flake off in the morning and another when you get home from work in the evening.

What's a smaller, big square baler go for? Just curious... Probably need 100hp@pto tractor and the accumulator and wagons would be something very, very special, too!

People around here are still using big rounds mostly. Lots of little horse farms 5 acres, etc - they need hay and most dont own a tractor. So, they want small squares. Light with twine. They buy by the bale, not the ton.
