From what I have seen, cub cadet has cheaped many of their lower models once they entered lowes. From what I hear from our local Deere dealer they did the same. Pretty much every dealer dreads having the service contract for those stores. The larger cub garden tractors still seem like quality.
I would highly recomend shopping around for a used piece. Since the BX rush that has happened for the last few years the used market is flooded with quality garden tractors at great prices.
