2006 John Deere 790
Last fall I purchased a brand new 790 from a dealership about 30 miles from my house. There is another dealership about 5 minutes from where I work. I gave them a shot at the deal but the other dealership beat them hands down. Now I have a very small problem, the bolt assembly that holds the bottom of the rear fender fell out. I figured I could just go the the dealership by my work and pick up replacement bolts and install them myself. The bolts and busshings ended up being $27.00  And they didn't even have any green paint on them:rolleyes: . I told the guy that the tractor is under warranty and gave him the serial number, purchase date and hours. He then calls me back and says JD will not warranty this repair unless his mechanics install the bolt, otherwise I have to pay the $27.00. By this time I had already installed the bolt. Is this guy blowing smoke up my rear?? I told him to have the service manager call me but have yet to hear from him.

I think most dealerships including automobile will require their techs to replace the parts. In some cases if the dealer knows you well he might trust you enough to take the parts and return the faulty ones if they need to be returned. In your case you say they just fell out, then I assume you don't have anything to return and probably not needed for warranty anyway. I would call and talk to the service manager and see if he can work something out with you.

Good Luck

I can certainly tell that the hobby farmers do not get treated as well as the grain farmers do. I farmed for 12 years prior to going back to school and getting a job in town. When I was farming the dealerships bent over backwards for you. If this was the case when I was farming, the dealership would have sent a guy out to my place to repair it. Not give me grief about it

I am actually surprised that the guy even said that it would be covered. I can see the dealer paying for it had the tractor been only a few days old. Then it would have been the person that assembled the tractor and prepped its responsibility to make sure that every thing was tight. Most manuals tell the owner to check bolts, wheels etc. to make sure that parts are tight as routine preflight. Since the tractor was purchased last fall, many things will fall under routine maintenance.

My dealer gives me parts and asks me to brign the old ones back, and most of the time will offer to send someone out... (20 miles) but I would rather do most the stuff myself. I have found that buying from a larger ag dealer is the ticket. I also own 4 larger tractors, so I do a fair amount of business with these guys.... And they give me good prices from the start, when i check around, most cannot be beat.
