JD4100 vs. New models?

A friend may be getting new JD soon. Wondering if the new 4010, 15, models are better or worse than a 4100? What are your opinions? Why is one better or worse?

Carl, better or worse are highly subjective terms. From the specs on the new ten series, it appear that the 4010 is slightly lighter and has 1.5 less horse power than the 4100. This would be better than the 4100 if your needs were simply cutting the grass or snow blowing and you wanted less weight on the lawn and to spend less $. The 4115 has 5 more HP than the 4100 and this would be better if you had needs for the additional HP, but of course the extra horses cost extra $. From the specs that I have looked at, the 4110 is exactly the same machine as the 4100 (performance-wise). I don't know what they changed on the 4110 that makes it different than the 4100. Maybe more bells and whistles?

jyoutz; it looks like they changed the hood and added some additional options like a folding ROPS in U.S.. Dunno what else as it appears to be the same everywhere else.

Yes, the hood has changed on the 4110. What Deere has done is to have a folding door to hid the fuel cap. So the hood is about 3 inches higher now. In fact, the new hood makes the tractor seem a little smaller.

An yes, there is a foldable ROPS. Kinda upsetting... I wish I had one. /w3tcompact/icons/eyes.gif

Probably some other feature changes, but I saw it at night, it was cold, and I couldn't spend much time looking it over. Well, to tell you the truth, the 4210 caught my eye.... ohhhhhhhh.... I want one.... started to work on the CFO..... /w3tcompact/icons/blush.gif/w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif

Yes, quite true on trading in... however, another year won't make much difference and other priorites take precedence.

Terry, oh man, do not get me started. I would have waited if I would have seen the foldable ROPS. I really wanted one of those too!

I went to the local garden show and most of the tractor dealers in the region were there also. After visiting my favorite orange dealers I mosied over to the several JD dealers. One had a 4100 on display and the other the new 4110. Frankly I could not see a great deal of difference, both appear equally nice with the one exception of a folding ROP on the new 4110. The hood appears different also on the 4110 but is still plastic I think or so it felt. The basic layout is essentially the same and anyone who is happy with a 4110 would be equally happy with the 4100 but NURU that folding ROP sure looks nice.
Take some pics of the folding ROP, take them and your ROP to a small jobs welding outfit and let them duplicate it. It will cost, you will get a folding ROP.
Actually I kinda like the looks of the 4100 a little better in terms of the hood and all but what the heck.
I also saw some of JD other new stuff for this year, very impressive line up but I would not start running out and trading in brand new tractors to get another brand new tractor!
NH had their super steers there, way cool and of course Kubota was there in force. I did not see any Kitois or Miahandras. Oh, I took a look at JD and Kubotas front mower units. I was impressed with both and there were quite a variety of other similar types from other manufactureres. These seem to be getting a lot of developement and popularity now with homeowners.

Is the hood on the 4110 plastic? If so, thats new. The 4100 hood is steel.

Got to play a bit with a brand new 4110, just briefly after they pulled it out of the shop. I assume it's a lot like the 4010, but they didn't have one of these yet. They gave me the specs from a sheet faxed to them by JD (they didn't have any lit yet..nothing!) the 4010 has a Hydro transmission, 18HP engine, 14 Hp at the PTO. Maybe a bit smaller overall, at least to me, than the 4100. I'm a bit baffled on why they put such a small engine on it on a tractor with a bigger frame than the Kub BX(just 14HP at the PTO, with a lot of the competition coming from the BX with 22 HP and 17 at the PTO. Seems they had a big opportuinity to take the spotlight away from the BX, and they may have blown it. By the time you get equal power (adv HP) you get into a lot more money than the BX.

The 4110: One thing that bothered me was that the top link mount on the rockshaft housing seemed anemic, i cant see any easy way of beefing it up. I wish they had placed the fuel tank in back, where it's easier to refuel (makes no diff to me, but it would to my wife and daughter). They also still have that housing in the middle of the deck, too... right where I put my tool bag. While I'm on the subject of dislikes, I also really didn't like the hood arrangement...no easy way to get off or just open the hood to check things out before running it. Maybe it's just me, but I like popping the hood do make sure no critters have done bad things to my baby and to clean it after I'm done for the day. The salesman couldn't even figger out how to get it open, but it is a new model, maybe we missed something. (it was too cold out to really give it the once-over properly)

Some things I liked: Dash arrangement; the seat; steering cylinder placement; 3 point hitch sizing (Looked bigger than my BX, probably giving more flexibility in some implements)
I like a lot of the layout of the JD, especially the joystick arrangement that always stays with the tractor, making it easier to change implements that need hydraulic control on the front end. ( I realize a lot of this is the way it was on the 4100)

I also got to look at the new 4310 and 4510, very cool. The new electronics package for the tranny has a lot of promise...here's to hoping the bugs are worked out. Neither of these tractors had what I really wanted to see, which was the new quick-attach system for the three point, though!

Don't get me wrong, I sure don't mean to bash JD, I could have easily went with the 4100 and it would have done what I needed just fine.... just geography with the location of dealers worked against them, and the price was quite a bit higher than the BX...about $4500 at the time, similarly equipped. (Besides, it sure would be nice to easily buy all that branded clothing and goodies!

Can't wait to see the 4010.

BTW, if anyone cares, the 4110 is made and assembled in Japan, according to the plate on the side of the frame.

you can always have jd put on a folding rops on the 4100. [this was available as an option back in 2000 anyway].

I did not open the hood but it appeared plastic. I thumped it and squished and it felt plastic. Maybe not but that is what I thought it was. I am not saying that is a negative but just that is what it looked like to me. The fenders were metal and it had a really neat PTO powered chipped shredder attached to it--wow!
I am not sure the ROP would exchange to the 4100, I did not spend enough time looking but there could be some difference also in the rear structure--I should have paid more attention. Sorry.

Yes, you can acquire a foldable ROPS as an aftermarket item for the 4100. There was a thread on this awhile back. It was not cheap!! Take the money and put it on a newer model - upgrade to a 4210 or 4310 - yessssss..... bigger, better, faster. Grunt..... arghhh... /w3tcompact/icons/eyes.gif

Gee, Tres, the folding ROPS, I am still sick over that one. Yes the hood is steal on the 4100, if the new ones have plastic, then that is new. I am still contemplating figuring out a way I can get the one from the U.K. made for the 4100. Or at sometime in the future, I will opt to get it done.

I was at a Deere dealer today (pricing out a new 110 TLB) and they had a 4110 next to a 4100. The 4110 had a plastic hood,fuel cap covered,electric 4wd switch,and something that I thought was much better,the loader control has been re-positioned so it doesn't hit your leg when operating it and it also seemed easier to climb on and off of........but thats just my opinion.

Nuru, are you sure that you really want a foldable ROPS? I used to think it would be great to have one, but now I'm glad I don't. I can't see how a hard canopy could ever work with a folding ROPS and I sure love my canopy now that I have one.
