Sorry to beat you guys up with a well covered topic, but I've got the tractor outside, $300-, worth of nuts, bolts, cable, tubes, QD's, handle, tools at the ready.......oowwww, this could be ugly! My only question is this- The Control Handle that will be mounted to right fender, is a 'friction lock' type, not self- centering, as I envisioned. It doesn't even have a 'notch-plate' to keep it in Neutral! What happens when it gets pushed fore or aft, without an outlet cylinder conected to the rear ports? A lot of 'hydro-growl', I would suspect! Any one done this on a 4200, with the back-hoe mounting plates installed? ~Scotty

Scotty:

I put the 3rd, 4th & 5th SCV kits and Power Beyond kit on my 4200 myself. So far I've just noticed the hydro-growl you mentioned. I need to get some hydraulically powered toys to go with the kits.

I'm going to make a suggestion to hopefully make your life easier. If you haven't got the PB kit, get it and install it at the same time as you do the 3rd SCV since you'll have the seat and right wheel & fender removed. I had to notch my fender to adjust the 3rd SCV clevis. Also the instructions call for adjusting the 3rd SCV clevis after the right wheel is on...yeah right, they goofed on that one.

Unfortunately with those kits being cable operated they won't return to neutral, so I think one will need to mark where neutral is after determining that location.

If you want a 4th & 5th SCV kit, I may know of one left in the country, and you will need the PB to make it work.

The Valve spool itself is what is supposed to center the handle-that's where the springs are. BUT-as MJ said, with the friction of the cable it does not work so well...

Well, it’s DONE! If you don’t count the tractor on jack-stands, rear tire removed, no right rear fender, no cover plates, no seat,……Sounds done to me! But seriously, I got the control body out, retrofitted with linkage bracket, bell crank etc. etc. etc. Got it all mounted back on top of the transmission, and all the ‘blessed’ lines reconnected! Kind of a funny start. After stripping the tractor seat, tire, fender, etc., the first thing it says is “Loosen the four hydro lines from the QD’s under your right foot plate.” I guess, for tube movement. Well with the FEL on, I couldn’t get in there to loosen them! What to do? Like any good (?) mechanic, skip to the next step!!! Actually I think it worked out better, ’cause it held all the lines right in place! The kit gave me more hydro-bushings than I needed! Do they put extra parts in just so you ’quadruple’ read the instructions? Good to have the extras though, one of the “O” rings had a big nick out of it, that would have me doing the whole job over had I not seen it! I had PB previously installed, Mjncad, so that saved me the rear bracket work. Dare I ask where the 4th and 5th valves go? Thanks, guys! ~Scotty

The 4th & 5th spools are in a single valve body just above left axle. Follow the control cable in the picture. The QD's are to the left of the PB and 3rd SCV QD's. Notice it is a snakepit with all the stuff installed.

Does the 4200 use different cables then whats on the 3x20 Cab machines? I find all my cable controlled SCV's (the 2 loader and 1 Rear) are smooth as silk...they return to neutral perfectly, etc...

No clue Dave, would have to research it on JDParts...But the know the control on my friends 4400 is very stiff.

I'll have a better 'handle' (Bad pun!) on the handle return issue when I button things up this weekend. The 'spool' springs in the valve body do seem pretty spunky though, and the friction block at the lever could probably be 'backed-off' a bit. Darn MJN.. that looks like an industrial hydro-source disguised as a tractor!!!~S

Yeah it does, which is why I want to eventually do some rework with hard lines to get rid of the space robbing hoses, because the 4th & 5th SCV's are a kludge powered by the PB kit. Since the rockshaft control valve doesn't have a PB port, I can't pipe it up simple as it should have been done by Deere.

Let us know how adjusting the lever friction block works out.

Scotty,
Let me know how you make out on adjusting the friction on the control handle. I have the same issue with the "hydraulic growl" if I don't center the handle.

mjncad,
Have you run into any problems hooking up to the quick connects next to the power beyond? I have a 4400 and it seems like the power beyond connectors are always in the way. I also noticed that I have a hydraulic fluid leak behind the fender and I will have to take the wheel and fender off to get at it, (hopefully a loose fitting) so I am wondering if I could use hoses instead of the hard lines and then run them up to a mounting bracket that I would attach to the fender or ROPS. Anybody have any suggestions on that, like where I might be able to obtain a bracket that I could u-bolt to the ROPS or bolt to the fender and then use Q/C's other than the expensive JD ones.

I purchased a hydraulic top link from C&C and I had to change the Q/C's they gave me to some that I had to purchase at the JD dealer.

Any ideas or help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance,
Eldon
