Here is reasoning behind 50/50 mix for hot or cold weather.
Antifreeze absorbs and holds heat. It will draw more heat from the engine but it is slower to release the heat when passing through the radiator. So a straight or high percentage of anitfreeze can cause engine overheat.
Water is just the opposite. It does not absorb heat as easily but is faster releasing it passing through the radiator. Straight water can result in engine overheat by not collecting enough heat from cylinder walls.
Mixing the 2 @ 50/50 gives the best of both worlds.
