I just tried running a jumper cable from the positive post of the battery directly to the starter post. Nothing. What does this indicate?

I just tried running a jumper cable from the positive post of the battery directly to the starter post.

You have to connect the small wire terminal on the starter motor solenoid
to the big positive terminal on the starter motor. The latter terminal has
a large wire on it going directly to the battery. You must have a good
ground connection. I use a short piece of thick copper wire and remove
the solenoid wire connector first to get at the terminal.

The 4300 has safety switches on the seat, the HST pedal neutral, the
PTO, and the brake. Jumper them to disable.

If you jumper from the battery (direct or from the big battery wire at the starter) to the small terminal on the starter you will be bypassing ALL the safety switches. If the ground circuit is complete and you put power to that small terminal the starter should spin/engage. The engine won't start unless you have power at the fuel solenoid however.
The switch on the brake petal of my 4300HST only disengages the cruise control. It isn't part of the start safety circuit.....
A short piece of wire or an old set of needle nose pliers is all you should need to jumper from the hot stud (about 5/16") to the coil of the start solenoid.
You might also be able to jumper across the solenoid itself with a heavier cable but its a tight squeeze.

I'm back home from a trip to southern Indiana. The tractor is still where I left it! We tried jumping from the large terminal to the small one and the starter does crank. What should be my next step?

The tractor has a back hoe attachment on it, preventing access to the safety switch for the PTO. If I just cut the cable and wire nut the two wires together, will that test the safety disconnect for the PTO? My son jumper-tested the seat switch, and the HST pedals. Are there any others?

This has gone on almost forever! I tested the wire from the ignition to the starter solenoid and there's no continuity. I ran a piece of 14ga romex from the plug in at the ignition and ran it to the starter solenoid. Turning the key results in the starter cranking, but the engine won't start. I am imagining that there's also no power to the fuel solenoid... What do I do now to unravel this mystery?

I switched around the different relays to see if there's a bad one, but the condition is the same. So I don't think it's a relay. I jumpered the safety switches but there was no effect. We jumpered across the starter solenoid and the starter cranks...

Any ideas? Thanks!

Well, the machine has been setting what...almost two months? Time for professional help, I think. Call the local Deere dealer.

If the tractor turns over you could check and see if there is fuel after the fuel solenoid.

Can you hear the solenoid click?

I had some trouble starting my 4200. It turned out to be oil in the solenoid.:)
