Hi, new to the forum, but have been reading tons of info. Looking for some advice. Looking at getting a tractor after about 8 years of not having one. I had an old ford 1210 with fel. Obviously it was a small machine, and always tippy, but useful. Now that i am in a better financial state been looking at TLB for my 5 acre property. Ive found a 2000 jd 4500 with roughly 2k hours. The guy is looking to get 18k with loader and backhoe. THe machine is very clean, looks like it was mostly used for snow work. Is this a lot of money for a 16 year old machine? Looking at tractorhouse, it doesn't seem to be too bad considering it also has the backhoe. Also, anyone have any thoughts on comparable machines? This is perhaps a bigger machine then I NEED but I do not want to be left wishing for something bigger. Thanks

Welcome, sounds a little high ...I am no expert...If it is 4x4, and in really nice shape I think 15k would be a fair deal:thumbsup:
When I bought my DK45 I bought the hoe with the tractor, they charged an additional 6500 new for the hoe...

AT 18k your within 8000 dollars or so of a brand new 40 horse machine with hoe, with a five year warrantee I would look at LS, (makes compacts for Newholland} or Kioti {Made compacts for Bobcat for sure, and I think they did for McCormic).

Both of these brands offer very good value for the money.

Ok. Thanks k you very much. I haven't looked at LS whereas there isn't a dealer near me and I haven't heard much about them. It sounded a bit high to me as well, but being in new England I haven't seen many larger frame tractors for sale, and it seemed on par for what I have seen around here. I suppose I will just see what he says if I ask him down a bit. Thanks again

Oh, and I don't think it is to big, When comes time to get some work done, you will appreciate the extra capability over a smaller machine.
They shrink when you get them home.

If you can only have one tractor, bigger is better IMHO;)

I don't know anything about pricing in New England, I seen NH and assumed New Hampshire:eek::D

Well nh is small enough that I have to start looking outside of the state. I agree with wanting to buy more then I think I need. Again I appreciate the response, I'm going to look tomorrow at the machine and really do think want to overpay by being excited

FYI My Dad has a 96 or 97 JD 970..Previous model to the one you are looking at.
My dads , as well as the one your are looking at were made by Yanmar for JD...Yanmar tractor with JD green paint.

Yanmar builds a fine tractor, my Dad is approaching 3000 hrs on his trctr ....his has been a solid machine,he had some problems with brakes chattering out of warranty he paid them to repolace the brakes and had the chatter again, turns out they put his old tractor fluid back in, after they brake job he did not need....he added some limited slip diff additive to the oil and the chatter went away... got refunded the money for the brake job ...Kudos to Jd for that . the additive package in the oil was broke down, he runs a front mounted large pto large snow blower and uses the steering brakes alot.

He also had the front axle pivot bushing/bearing fail, but all in all its been a solid machine. He has used it at its limits alot.

Yea I'm not opposed to one brand or the other. Good to hear he has used his machine hard and it has held up well. I know most of these machines are only made or sourced from a few different vendors so brand is not an issue. Again the used market around here isn't too great, so options so seem limited. Ivery looked at full size backhoes for around the same money, but the logistics of moving one and using it in gardens around the yard make it unfeasible.

I've been looking for a few months and have been doing a ton of research, but it's just a limited market. Brand new is really not in the budget, but again I don't want to spend too much just because I'm getting antsy. I guess there are worse problems to have lol
