Larry, thanks for the info. I was planning on buying the Shop manuals but the salesman talked me out of it since the cost was hundreds of dollars. Are the tech manuals the same as the shop manual? For the price you paid I want them!

Thanks...

Hi Dan,

I don't know anything about the "shop" manuals.

I'm hoping that since the parts catalog and the technical manual are mentioned in the owner's manual (and a number to call to obtain them), this indicates that someone thinks the info they contain might be of interest/use to an "owner".

The "shop" manual might be necessary for someone wishing to rebuild the engine or make other major-repairs requiring special tools/equipment/training beyond that which the ordinary "owner" would posess. I would expect this manual to be in the JD dealer's service dept.shop.

But remember,... these are just my imaginings.
Thoughtful-sounding words to write in-place-of "I don't have a clue!" :)

I'll post an opinion when the PC and TM arrive.

I got the parts manual and the tech manual for Christmas /w3tcompact/icons/laugh.giffor my 790.
The parts manual does a good job of giving exploded diagrams of everything, but almost no description of what each part is for.

The tech manual has a very good description of what each system does and how to take care of it / replace it. I found the complete flow diagrams and explanations for the hydraulic stuff to be worth the cost alone ( I know, it was a Christmas present, but I'd already checked 'em out which is how my wife knew I wanted them /w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif)

MarkCG,

Your description of the tech manual's explanation of the system functions sounds like just what I was hoping for.

Now I'm even more eager to get mine :)

Thanks,
Larry

So it looks like the Shop Manuals, my term, likely have much more detail than I need. I'm certainly not going to be rebuilding engines and tranny's.

But I do want the info that you say is in the manuals...

I guess I'll have to save my penny's....

Thanks,

Mark, if you don't mind my asking, how much are the 790 manuals your kind wife got you? BTW, what did you get her? I know our (my) tractor cost me pretty big this past Christmas. I shudder to think how much iron I could have got for the price of what she's now wearing on her wrist.

I'll have to get an exact number tonight, but around $100 for the both pubs.
