I'm still looking at and evaluating tractors. Does anyone know anything about the MF1455. And how does it compare with the tractors listed in this message's subject (JD5105, M4900, and TC-45 / TC-48 series or the NH-TN series.

Additionally, in terms of power, reliability and durability, which is better a 3 cylinder or 4 cylinder engine, wet cylinder liners, dry cylinder liners or cast in block cylinder. Does weight really make a difference, can compact or utility class tractors with the same HP do the same amount of work. I will appreciate any and all information anyone can provide. Evaluation of the different features and options available for 40 to 50 PTO HP tractor is quite difficult. I am so confused.

You might want to check into the Massey 451 and 461 also.

Horsepower is not always the only determing factor in what a tractor can do.

Could you please tell me what the determining factor is.

Not sure that I can say traction is the MOST important but it is right there with HP. As many have said on here, and I have experienced with three different tractors ... usually you'll run out of traction before you run out of power.

another thought I had reading this thread ....could you do better buying a used bigger tractor for bailing hay and tending those fields, and a smaller 20 -25 hp tractor for the mowing duties. The reason I bring that up, I mow with my Kubota Grand L 3010. It does a fine job, but I can't imagine mowing with a 48 or bigger like your considering, unless its just a wide open field that your wanting to mow.

Good luck in your search.

( Could you please tell me what the determining factor is) When you lose traction, you're not using the full potential of your horsepower. Weight helps you to use the full HP of the tractor. Gearing has a lot to do with all of this as you can pull larger and stronger with a lower gearing. For the most part, any of these tractors will do OK. You will learn to place the tractor in the proper gear for the use. If you were to start in a higher gear and really give it acceleration, the tractor would at first lug down and then catch back up as you pick up speed just for an example. Hope this helps a little.
