The 5400 has a joystick that controls the 2 scv's regarless what is plugged into them. And that is where the loader gets its hydraulics from. The dealer told me that was the normal setup for the 5400. Only option is to add a 3rd scv. This is my first tractor with a joystick and untill someone else was asking similar questions I didn't know any better myself. JD must have a million different configurations about how they do things. Seems no 2 tractors share common features. The new 5403 ( similar to my 5400 ) has a seperate loader control and the joystick is just for the remotes.

Then I would say you have something wrong with your scv. Time to get dirty or take it to the dealer. Float is definately worth having!

I got er fixed. The float position in the SCV is held with a set of ball bearings and springs in the end cap. The balls were rusted in place and would not let the spool end retract to the float position. I replaced the end cap with a new one and everything works fine now. I think the other spool is stuck also for the rejenerative position in dump. That cap can't be removed until I pull the whole valve off. It will have to wait till get around to installing the 3rd SCV.
