Re: Jim\'s Boomer Battery Box

I like it Jim. Another "sure cure" for the NH battery blues.

I might suggest checking the inside of the battery box from time to time for any spilled acid. Should be an easy job to mop any up now that you have contained it.

Re: Jim\'s Boomer Battery Box

How about a drain tube to channel that excess fluid to the ground ? Many motorcyle batteries come with a tube already attached. Maybe this is a good idea for tractor batteries as well ?

That's a good idea, Jerry. I'm going to watch it for awhile and if fluid builds up, I just might do that exact thing. My guess is that since there is so much open room at the top, any fluid will simply evaporate out. By having the box covered, rain should not be a problem. We had a shower here early this morning and no water showed up inside the box. I have my fingers crossed that most of the severe problems are gone.

Mike, I do feel a little foolish letting this get to this state before doing something. I guess my only excuse is that since the battery was sitting on the shelf, I didn't see any problem until I took it out. I sure hope my post will make everyone look a little closer at their tractors.

If I was buying a new tractor, I would not take delivery until the Optima battery was installed. Even if I had to pay for the whole thing out of my pocket, it would be less than the lost time and effort I spent correcting this mess. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Re: Jim\'s Boomer Battery Box

Jinman;
After viewing your mess with the spill I have stopped using the tractor till I get a decent battery. Going to check the optima and the odyssey brands tomorrow. The nh doner battery will go to my cub so the weed field can continue to fall. I was also contemplating a boat style box which may be an option with a new die hard. I know the problem has to be fixed very soon... like this week. Thanks for the pictures... it sure is a wake up call !!!! It still grinds me that the few problems NH has, the company or dealer is not interested in putting out a recall and standing behind the orig defect. Maybe they are not required to by law but in the terms of customer satisfaction they are not too high on my list. No customer survey forms... it figures !!

Re: Jim\'s Boomer Battery Box

Hi Jim,

I like our holy hood. My old Boomer didn't have a top grill, and I had to watch it very closely when cutting the field. The front intake would quickly stop up with grass seed and fluff. The new one sucks mainly from the top, so it's protected better. The front intake is much less prone to stopping up because suction is divided between top and front.

NH needs to spend $20 more per unit and supply a good quality AGM battery on their new tractors. Problem solved! Customer satisfaction improved!

I also like covertibles, but I wouldn't leave the top down in a rain storm. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Hey! No argument from me. Knowing what I know now, I'd have gladly paid $50 or more for the proper battery. I'm not really happy with NH's current battery either.

This is the first tractor I've ever owned that no matter how much "cotton" builds up on the front, it always runs in the normal heat range. It's a joy to operate when everything works right. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Re: Jim\'s Boomer Battery Box

Jinman;
Depends on how fast you drive. I have been out in the vette when a storm suddenly appeared but I found a little more pressure on the accelerator makes the rain flow nicely over the passenger compartment. It is the stopping part that puts a damper on things... so it is a good excuse to keep driving. Next you will want an a/c cab for the boomer ( which is on my hit list )

Excellent work Jim, now you need to get a patent and sell it to NH for an exorbitant fee to make up for all you're hardship.:thumbsup:

Actually, I just posted to this very old thread so a member could see that last illustration. I had a problem including the image in a PM, so I just posted it here with a link in the PM. My battery box is terrific. It's even better with my Optima Red Top in it.:D I bought that Optima at Sam's before the prices went through the roof. It was $102 back in 2005, and with tax I got out of Sam's Club for $112 with an Optima battery and a smile on my face.:)
