Do you mean that I remove the spin on filter, then look up inside the top? Could you make clearer to me what I am looking for if something is amiss? I do have another filter....

Will make sure the system is inactive before unspinning the filter.

Also, how many places are there on the suction side for me to check for air induction?

Yes, remove the spin on filter and have bucket ready to catch the oil.

Look into the filter head on the suction side and you should see a spring with a little plastic piece in the middle of it [centered]. If it is broke .... you could find/see it broken [small pieces], cocked to one side, gone, etc, etc.

You may have to wipe/clean the oil out of the way so you can see it .... but you can see it.

Follow the suction line to check for possible air induction.

OK, I just wanted to report back what I found. Don't forget, I am a newbie, having had the tractor for only a year now...

The advise was to look for an air induction leak. Truth be told, soon as i went to the spin on hydraulic filter (ok, strainer) I noticed it wasnt on really tight. Now, the instructions were to hand tighten only, which I did when I changed the fluid; so that thing came loose somehow. I turned it about one turn, lit up the tractor, and the hydraulic system worked PERFECTLY. So may I please say THANK YOU to the absolutely CORRECT advise. It was indeed an air induction leak.

It is really interesting to learn to fix these things, even tho I dont do my own car repair.....!!

Also would like to say that if RANCH HAND SUPPLY guy were in this town, I would buy from him right away! You've tried to help me on other occasions, ranch hand guy. Thanks.

You can buy from him anyway. He ships all over. Don't know how much gas you use to visit your local guy, but sometimes UPS equals that or is less. What about the time saved driving to and from?

Hello just reading all this good advice.I'm not even sure where to start, but I'm pretty sure I will be contacting you guys for parts when I figure out what I need.I just purchased a 2005 yr. 254A four wheel drive Foton. The engine runs great and the hr meter shows 215 hours. The previous owner had done some work on the hydraulic's,not really sure what he did he said it seemed to work fine for just a little bit after it was finished then it just quit. Now nothing works it is pouring foamy hydraulic fluid out I'm guessing the front seal onto the clutch and slinging it out the clutch inspection hole.It has of course soaked the clutch so I'm sure it will need replaced as well as the front seal.I have no idea what cause it to blow the seal out.Nothing seems to work on the lift to the three point and the transmission does not want to shift into any gear, the shifter linkage feels like it's not engageing or something is binding not sure.
Where should I start I know I will proabley have to split the tractor and replace the oil soaked clutch and clean up the flywheel good and of course the pressure plate throw out bearing will be replaced with the clutch. What should I look for that may have caused the front seal to blow and the transmission problems I'm sure it's all tied together. The tractor did have a front end loader on it previously but the former owner removed it and just connected the two hydraulic hoses together.
I dont have any books or manual's on this tractor other then a parts catalog and a receipt where he purchased someting used from a place in iowa for the hydraulics for 75.00 not even sure what it was.It just says used hydraulic parts.Do you sell a complete service manual for this tractor? I was able to down load a owners manual but in pdf format it's a bit difficult to have by your side at the tractor. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance

Bikeguy, Jinma and Foton are two completely different tractor manufacturers. You're better off starting a new topic with this. There are a considerable number of misconceptions in your post, many of which could be quickly rectified after you get the 4 manuals. Start there.

Thanks Greg could you tell me what 4 manuals that I need the only one I have is the Foton parts catalogue of Foton Euro Leoapard series 25 wheeled tractors.could really use a complete shop service manual if they make such a thing for it.Sorry also I thouoght both Jinma and Foton were produced by the shandong heavy equipment industries LTD in china.Congrats on moving up to a John Deere/ Yanmar they are sweet little tractors till you have to buy parts for it.That Yanmar is one tough little engine, yes I know two different tractor companies.

I just bought 4 manuals for an area guy for his FT404. I'm assuming that there will be four for your 254 as well:
1. Tractor operations and maintenance
2. Tractor parts
3. Engine operations and maintenance
4. Tractor parts

Sound like you have one that might satisfy #2, but manuals should be purchased based upon the tractor data plate (usually inside one of the fenders or on/alongside the transmission housing) and the engine data plate (usually on the valve cover or the side of the block). Have those numbers ready when you order from a Foton dealer.

Thanks again Greg I have looked up the data plate numbers and found them and will be ordering the manuals.I gotta get this thing going need to be working with it now but kind of looking forward to learning about it as work on it.Just all new to me,I spent 32 years as a licensed U.S.Coast Guard chief engineer and been rideing and wrenching bikes since I was 11 years old.Regardless to what Foton may claim this aint no Perkins diesel engine LOL but it does run smooth just got to sort out the rest of it.

Not the small Fotons. The Perkins claim applies to the 40 hp and above engines. Even then, it's not made - or even licensed by - Perkins. They're simply Chinese engines designed around the Perkins style. Copyrights and patents aren't meaningful concepts in China. If it helps, I got manuals and parts for that FT404 from John Lea. He and his wife are very helpful, even went the extra mile to source an apparently obsolete part that was no longer available from Foton.

I'm less than 125 miles from you by the way. If push comes to shove, you can trailer it up here and we can double-team the thing. I may even have some left over parts from my own Chinese tractor days.
