Hahahaha. Whoever wrote that first sentence doesn't understand how diesel engines work. The problem there is that naive people will believe it. While it's understandable that automotive writers must make a living, most of the time I find myself wincing at the license they take. Even the glossy-covered Motor Trend is guilty, but not nearly as enlightening as a SAE white paper that removes all the hype.

When I was a much younger engineer, I worked as an automotive engineer doing accident investigations and recall type defect investigations for the Canadian government. My job had me spend a lot of time at automotive, truck and bus test facilities and I was always impressed by the knowledge say of the engineer responsible for the power steering pump. He could talk for hours about his pump but ask him about another part of the vehicle and he knew very little. I guess developing technologies for mass production requires many component specialists and one super bright generalist to tie it all together in a working car.

I did belong to SAE but this was in the late 1960's early 1970's before internet etc.

If you have access to the SAE paper on Mazda's sort of stratified charge technology, I sure would appreciate being able to read it.

I was an SAE and SNAME member during the early to late '70's. It was during that time that John Deere purchased the patent rights to the Wankel Stratified Charge rotary engine. They developed three "SCORE" engine families with hp ratings from around 50hp up to 3,000hp. Sold again to Rotary Power International (RPI) where it has languished ever since. Sincerest apologies for hijacking the thread.
Chief Engineer for past ten years - unlimited horsepower.

Bob R.

I was looking at the torque power and fuel consumption graph and was amazed at the peak torque of over 1,300 from 1.6 liters and then I realized it was 11.6 liters.

I will look more closely at the other material :)
