Hey everyone,

Need some urgent help on properly flushing out the cooling system on my Jinma 254.
Opened the radiator cap and the water is the colour of rust. Seems like the radiator cap has rusted quite badly.

Am I right to just pull the radiator off and stick a hose down the top tube so that water comes out the bottom hose? Or is there a better way?

Any help would be very helpful

I take out the thermostat and put the hose in the hole the cap came off of, turn the water down to were it is just running over and with the engine running I walk away for awhile and wait for it to run clean. Then I put in a package of cooling system cleaner put the cap on for half an hour with the engine running and let it eat all the rust and other items that have stuck to the walls of the engine. In the USA we use permanent antifreeze in everything for many reasons but it has a anti rust additive in it that prevents it from happening. But it has a aluminum powder in it that can and does stick to the engine block and has to be flushed at times because it act like a insulator and stops the water from moving the heat out of the block. Then back to the hose and let it flush real good then put back the thermostat and check the rubber seal on the cap,It is important that the cap seals it as a lack of pressure in the system can let it run cool and leak. https://www.walmart.com/ip/35764365?wmlspartner=wlpa&selectedSellerId=0&adid=22222222227025095639&wl0=&wl1=g&wl2=c&wl3=42533031992&wl4=pla-81189730592&wl5=9016745&wl6=&wl7=&wl8=&wl9=pla&wl10=8175035&wl11=online&wl12=35764365&wl13=&veh=sem

You shouldn't have any signs of rust at all if you are using an anti-freeze with a rust inhibitor. I have a coolant filter installed which also removes casting sand, which is the number one cause of coolant pump seal failure. I really hope you aren't using straight water as coolant. You don't want to remove the thermostat when doing a chemical flush because the operating temperature helps it work. In lieu of automotive chemical flush products you can substitute Cascade dishwashing soap.

Thanks for the replies gents. I've only just bought the tractor and am not sure what the previous owner has used but will make sure I use the correct stuff.

Probably a dumb question, but does the tractor need to running in order to do the flush? Would my method of radiator removal and hosing water through the top tube work?

Need to get a hold of a user manual as this is my first tractor and I'm still learning what does what.

Any premium quality 50/50 mix will be okay as long as it's rated for diesel engines. Don't get the yellow stuff because it will slightly gel over time.

I wouldn't bother removing the radiator. Yes, the engine needs to be running. For two reasons. 1) Chemical flushes require the engine to be at operating temperature to work properly. 2) When the engine is running the coolant pump is also circulating the flush throughout the cooling passages in the engine block and cylinder head. Remember that you will also perform a fresh water flush to remove any traces of the chemicals. Some chemical flushes are highly alkaline and others are acidic, and should not be left in the system.

Manuals are available from Tommy at Affordable Tractor, Northern Tool, and many other sources. Just Google "Jinma 254 manual". I strongly recommend installing a coolant recovery system. They are simple to install, and can be purchased at almost any auto supply store for around $12.00. They will keep the air out of your cooling system, and that's important.

Thanks again Bob. I'll have a go at it tomorrow and see how I go.
Would you know if Tommy does international postage? I'm from Australia. If not, I'll send him an email.

QUick question while I'm here, to glow the glow plugs, I have to have the key positioned between "on" and "start"?

Thanks for the link Rocky J. Good read.

Yes, I believe Tommy does international shipping.
That key position sounds about right. How many positions are indicated on the key switch label?

That's a pic of my keyswitch.

Too easy Tommy. I will send you an email during the week.
