At work I run a couple of John Deere tractors (5200, 5510). On both you can shift the tractor in gear while you are moving like a car. You have to stop to shift between the three ranges. Can you shift the Jinma tractors that way or do you have to stop to put them in each gear? Thanks, Ash

While shifting up, you can be in motion and shift up. Just like your car.

However, when downshifting you either need to be at a stop, or make sure your RPMs match.

You can double clutch much like in a big truck. But the easiest, harshest way is to mash the gas and jam it in gear. It takes practice and the first couple of times you will be at a stop before you get down a gear anyways.

Further to what Mike says, Jinmas must be at a full stop when shifting the range lever between Hi and Lo. Shuttle shift equipped Jinmas must also be completely stopped when shifting betweem Forward and Reverse

I'm surprised to hear you guys say that you can shift up on the fly after all that's been said about the trannys having square cut gears and being non-syncro.

I just took a look at the pictures on Jinma Parts and they definitely are not square cut, they are tapered:

I've never even tried to shift on the fly believing that it wasn't possible. Now I'm going to have to go home at lunchtime and try it!

I have been upshifting mine for quite a while now - not between the High and Lo ranges - just between the gears once I am within a range. Mostly high range. No problems to report. Without upshifting, I would never see 2nd or higher - would be burning the clutch trying to take off.

I've tried to down shift a couple of times, but, have not been successful - hate that NOISE. Tried 2x clutching but have not made a real effort at watching the RPMs; just listen to the engine sound. May give it another try this weekend watching the RPM's.

Thanks,
Eddie

That seems odd. Most tractors that are non synchro are made to start of in any gear the tractor is equipped with...

My big fords take off in 8th with no more clutch slip than 1st..

Hey Soundguy,
I probably baby mine more than I should. I have just noticed that starting out in second or third gear I feel a bit more slippage than I like. Just as easy for me to start out in the low gear (1st) and upshift.

I am OK with some of the mechanical tasks we have discussed in the past, but, replacing a clutch would probably be at the limit for me. Not something I would want to really tackle. (unless you wanted to come up to NC for the weekend and help!) Anything I can do to avoid replacing a clutch, I am all for. :)

If it's a non synchro tranny.. I really question whether it was meant to be shifted on the go ( whether it will do it or not). My concern would be for tranny replacement.. not clutch replacement.

having experience with old amchines.. It's not uncommon for a clutch to last 50 years... that is.. i have many antiques on what is most likely the OEM clutch.....so.. that tends to color my view a bit on clutch usage. I don't excessively slip mine.. though i do start out at the lowest throttle setting where the engine doesn't excessively lug down to stall, when starting out in high gear.

For 30hp tractors and lower.. I don't see clutch replacement as being difficult.. just a job like any other.. takes time and parts .. now for something big.. yeah.. I wouldn't want to do it. ( When / if my clutch ever needs replacing in my NH 7610s or my ford 5000... I'm having the dealer or local tractor mechanic do it.... Jacking and cribbing a 3000# tractor is one thing.. jacking and cribbing a 6000# tractor is entirely different! )

And hey.. If I lived close to ya.. I wouldn't mind stopping by for a day of wrenching on a tractor.. no matter who makes it. Perhaps enjoy a cold beverage as well.

My KAMA does also...

ejtaylor822, yours should too. If you become proficient at double clutching, you can find they shift well. But you've got to hit that rpm spot where it "slips" into the next higher or lower gear without ANY grinding or resistance from the shift.

My uncle used to have an old datsun 210.. taught me to drive in it. Once he got moving, he could drive all day without the clutch, as long as there was no stopping and starting....

I'm not willing to 'learn' where the sweet spots on my tractor tranny gears are... That grinding sound is like grinding up money...!! I know I may wear my clutch out a tad earlier than someone else.. but I also know my gears won't all have worn rounded edges ...
