My JM 284 has about 60 hours on it and since I have owned it the left side brake has grabbed more than the right. Lately the left side will lock up the wheel on just a touch of that peddle and the wheel will stay locked up until I engage the trans. Then I hear a pop sound that releases the wheel. I remember some posts on CTOA about similar problems but can't get the sight up (like most) to search. I am finally almost ready to move into my new house with garage so I can work on the tractor and would appreciate any tips on what to look for. Thanks for any info.

Not sure if the brakes are wet or dry on that model, but I think dry. From the symptoms there may be oil getting on the disc's.

From the factory, the brakes typically need adjustment to get them both to give even pressure, when locked together. Dealers take care of it, but can be an item overlooked. There is adjustment for each individual brake, found just infront of each brake housing. When I did mine, one was just slightly different from the other. Just took a couple minutes to figure out how the adjustment worked. Don't remember exactly what it was now.

It sounds like a problem, now, and not an adjustment. If the tractor has been stored outside in the elements, good chance water has built up inside. There is a bolt on the bottom of each side brake housing. Remove it and see if any water or hopefully not oil, drains out. If only water, you might get lucky by spaying allot of brake cleaner in there. Otherwise will have to take apart.

One of the common problems was water getting into the brake chamber and rusing the disks... Like John said there is two SMALL bolts, "10MM I think" under each brake housing that SHOULD be removed so that eny thing in there can drain... Use should UN STICK them but you may need to re-adjust them too. not sure if Mike or Grham is around but they would be able to tell you the exact procedure as I've not had to mess with mine...
