We have a unique "venue" up here. There's not much in the experienced trade's labor pool up here. Electricians, plumbers, HVAC, and especially commercial fire alarm. Everyone with experience that wants to work (and is good), already has a job. The only ones that can't keep a job are the worthless ones, and they pass back and forth between what few companies there are. New, inexperienced/untrained techs don't want to learn, or don't want to work at it. They think they can come in off the street, knowing little to nothing about the trade, and pull in top dollar like the seasoned/journeymen/master techs. My last apprentice left at 1 year. He didn't want to get up early, didn't want to travel (mostly around western ND), and didn't like that he was starting out much lower on the pay scale because he was new. He also wasn't interested in studying to pass exams to get his certifications. Even though that was the path that would lead to "making the big bucks", he thought he should get the "big bucks" first.
On a side note, any commercial fire alarm techs that have solid experience, have their cert (NICET), and want to move to ND, I can about garranty you will have a job for life (if you want it) and can just about write your own ticket on pay and benefits.
