I have an old JD 1030 that when hot won't re-start. Basically the engine turns over but not fast enough and sounds like a flat battery. It will jump start and when it cools down it starts fine. The battery state is good. Could this possibly be an issue with the starter motor getting too hot?

Any ideas / thoughts would be most appreciated.

1st thing to do is re-locate the battery ground cable connection from the battery box to the engine block/starter mounting bolt. Are you aware that while attempting to start that rapidly moving steering wheel from side to side will help relieve hyd pressure so starter can turn engine easier? One can also install and use a hyd pump destroking screw(parts key #5).

Thanks Tx Jim,

Will give that a go. It doesn't have power steering so I guess rocking steering won't help.

If no power steering then destroking screw is the next option.

That's a classic symptom of worn starter bushings letting the armature gat too close to the fields. Might just need bushings; do brushes while its apart - simple job on the bench.

Sorry jimmysisson but it's also a classic symptom of a closed center hyd system trying to build pressure while engine is being started. On most JD tractors of that era having a slow start problem you can rebuild starter and engine still won't start without relieving hyd pressure. 21+ yr employment at a JD dealership in sales & service back when 1030 was new

Thanks Guys.

Tx Jim, I assume the drawing you posted is part of the Hydraulic pump, I haven't had a chance to look as yet but where is it located? To test if it a Hydraulic issue could I not just loosen off bolt #1. Is the destoking screw an "auto" release valve if not how does it work?

Thanks again.

Loosening #1 will make a mess. I would suggest installing destroking screw especially since your tractor has "manual steering". Let me clarify that you need to determine which hyd pump you tractor has for obtaining correct DS screw. The correct way to use a DS screw is open LH screen in ft of radiator, turn DS screw down a few turns, crank engine then turn DS screw back out. Screw cost about $15 USD.

Great thanks for clarification.

Tx Jim - I bow to your experience but why would the hyd only affect hot starting? Would the slow turning still happen if he ran the engine only two minutes? Curious is all.
