I own a JD 1050 that does NOT have a FEL. I think this is a great tractor for the uses I have for it. I may have an opportunity to purchase a JD(8B I think) backhoe attachment for my tractor, but a friend has cautioned me that mounting a backhoe on a tractor without a FEL, to stabalize the front, will undoubtely result in damage to the front end as forces are transfered. I do not forsee using this attachment extensively, but would not jepordize damage to my tractor.
Can anyone give me an honest opinion on this?

An opinion? Sure!

For occasional light use and plenty of front ballast, you could probably get away with it.
Problem is, that "occasional light use" would probably turn into frequent heavy use.
I'm also guessing the backhoe is a 3PH unit (no subframe).
Ultimately, I think you'd break your 1050.

I agree with Roy. It is not a good idea...to add to that, most backhoe subframes attach to the FEL mounting brackets so you may not even be able to properly mount the hoe.

I have a Ford 2810 II tractor, 2WD, that I use with my 3PH backhoe-MF 1750. I have dug footers as deep as the backhoe will go in red clay, ditches, removed big rocks and stumps, dug waterways, you name it, for about 20 years. Some of the digging is straight behind the tractor and sometimes I have to dig to the side of the tractor, in tight spaces. I do not have a FEL and no front ballast except a typical Ford bumper. This is occasional use only, just a few times a year. No problems so far. But that's just my experience. YMMV.

I think it all depends on the operator. An experienced operator who knows the limits of the tractor and backhoe, would probably be okay. But I think there is also a safety issue. Placing the bucket of the loader on the ground, just helps to stabilize your tractor and attached hoe that much more.

so... is it a good idea... probably not. Can it be done... Yes. I just don't think it's nearly as safe as having a loader on your tractor.
