We are ready to reinstall the power steering unit, I took the whole assembly to our local JD dealer and had them go through it. Before removing the valve body the manual says to remove the drain plug on the right side of the clutch housing to drain the oil, which I did. There was a fair amount of sludge in the bottom of the housing, any ideas of where it came from. Also do we need to put oil back in the housing before putting it back together? Can't figure out how the oil gets in there. Thanks, Tom

The sludge in that area is a normal occurrence. The oil flows very slowly through there and Deere says that the earlier HyGard had graphite in it that settled out of the oil in that area. You do not need to add any oil to that area. It is filled with return oil out of steering valve.

Well, it looks like it was the o rings in the power steering valve that were causing the problems. Thanks everyone for all your help.
