John Deere 2040 quit driving

I inherited a 1976 2040 and was driving through the pasture today getting ready to use the auger to dig some holes. I engaged the clutch pedal and coasted down a hill about 20 feet. At the bottom of the hill I let out on the clutch and it won't move. The PTO moves when it is engaged and you can tell the tractor moves slightly when you put it in gear but almost seems like something is slipping. Can anyone tell me what my problem is. I haven't had any other problems with it except Hydrolic pressure in the past but I recently changed all the fluids/filters and haven't noticed anything since then.

What gear was it in when you "coasted"?

If the tractor was in a lower gear,, and you push in the clutch, and coast,,
the speed of the clutch can be so great the clutch will explode.

I had a clutch explode on a 820 years ago, no mistaking what it was from the sound of it. Have you tried high/low shifter to see any difference?

Ditto on traction clutch needs replaced because lining slung off. One should never coast down a hill with trans in gear & clutch pedal depressed.

The tractor was in 3rd gear however it didn't make a sound when it stopped working. I realize it was operator error as I am new to all this. I know now that you don't coast with it in any gear.

We all have found out some things the hard way. Now to figure out a "next step" for you to get it fixed.
Are you up to trying to do the work yourself? Or have a way to get it to either the dealer or a repair shop?

We'll see what we can collectively do to help.

For starters, use the google search window in the upper right on TBN. I put in "JD 2040 clutch repair" and came up with several hits. One which may be of interest, as a similar thing happened, also split the tractor and shows repair.
