john deere 2240
I operate a John Deere 2240, for the most part not many issues but when tractor has used for a while shifting from HI, Low, and Reverse become nearly impossible. some one said to grease the shaft on the inside left side but I have found no zerts nor have any clue where this grease would go.....any ideas, advise would be appreciated..

My guess is the detent balls(parts key #4) are rusty and need lubrication. Only way to access the shifter shafts is to remove cover with gearshifts.

As Tx Jim said; nothing to grease.

But I wonder if it's something else, since you say "when the tractor has been used for a while" the problem starts. So does it shift OK at first? How long until it starts shifting hard? I wonder if the clutch is heating up, and starting to drag, causing hard shifting? Check your clutch adjustment.

It would not hurt to try and lube the shift shafts. The detent balls are in the transmission case casting. You have to pull the cover with the gear shifters. I would start with a cleaner/rust remover, followed with a lube. You may have to pull the rockshaft cover to access both sides of the shift shafts. Key 13 is the Low- Reverse shaft. Key 16 is the Park- High shaft.
