John Deere 2240
Hello everyone, I have been working on this problem for a while and I cant seem to find the problem. My 2240 wont turn over, it sounds like the armature of the starter is coming out and contacting the flywheel but it wont turn it over. I have replaced the batteries with new 800cca batteries and cleaned the ground and all of the terminal connections. I think that it might be the starter solenoid but I'm not sure. I don't know if I'm losing amps somewhere or what, any help would be greatly appreciated.

Sounds as if one needs to pull starter from engine and beech test the starter. While starter is off inspect flywheel ring gear teeth.

Are the battery cables getting warm/hot? This could be resistance in a cable or bad terminal.
Try using jumper cables from the new battery direct to the starter.
Try hitting the starter with a hammer (not too hard) if the brushes are near the end of the life (worn in length) a hit might make them give a little better contact and give you a few more starts.

no the battery cables are not hot and I cleaned the connections. I was hoping that the starter wouldn't have to come off because JD did a nice job of designing a loader that quite effectively blocks almost everything. The starter is behind the loader as well and the fuel filter and oil dipstick, like I said John Deere did a nice job. I tried jumping the starter directly and it still clicks but I thought there was a way to jump the starter to make the starter spin even if the solenoid was bad but I have forgotten how.

Depending on the starter (JD used several) there will be either a wire or a copper link going from the solenoid into the starter motor. It will be at the same end the battery wire attaches. Right below the battery terminal. The drawing has the strap style connector part 31

Jump with a screw driver from the big battery cable to the strap. Starter motor should run with out solenoid being powered.

ok so I took a look at it today and just for kicks I turned the key, it still clicked but I noticed that a piece of small chain hanging off the loader about 2 inches from the starter moved towards the starter when I turned the key. I am going to assume that because the starter is becoming magnetic that it is receiving power and it sounds like its engaging the flywheel but not turning. So I suppose my options are to take off the starter and see why its jammed. Zebrafive thanks I will take a look at my starter and see if it will help anything.

Pretty good assumption :). The case of the starter does become an electromagnet. So at least you're getting power to that point, and it's enough power to attract that chain.

The solenoid popping out is another known good part for you. The problem could be as stated earlier, the starter motor isn't actually turning due to possibly worn brushes. I bet it's the brushes/commutator that needs to be looked at. You should be able to rebuild the starter for around $20.
