I don't know about cost, but a front blade is far better than a rear blade for moving snow. I can do as much with a 109 Cadet as I can with my Kubota B7100. The former has a front blade, manual lift, hydrostatic tranny and chains on the rear tires. The latter has a 6' rear blade, 4 wheel drive, Ag tires, manual tranny, and an FEL. If the snow is really heavy, I move it with the loader.
At one point, I had the blade from the Cadet rigged to mount on the bucket of the FEL. That worked well until my homemade mounting system broke, but it was pretty far ahead of the front wheels.
