I have the higher end APC devices that provide filtered power on the output side. As long as the input voltage / frequency is within range, the UPS devices will "use it" to keep the batteries charged and provide clean power to your devices.

Be wary about other ways that bad power can enter your setup, tho... ALL of my computer equipment (including switches, routers, cable modem, etc) are on filtered power APC devices. My TVs, satellite equipment, movie players, DVD players, etc are also all on filtered power UPS devices. ANYTHING that has a path to my "protected" equipment has be to be at least surge protected or I don't connect it.

PC, y'all must have some big houses, 400A is double most here in our county. I have a a couple of friends that have bought up here and are building. They started out thinking 3500 sq feet, but I just had to point out they are retiring so downsizing a little might be something to consider. Both decided to go fulll basements & the total is under 3K. One build at the end of my road is 9K sq ft....I wonder what his heating and cooling bill is gonna look like?

Well my across the road neighbor has about a 10k sqft. house and he usually runs ~$5000 a month combined utility bill (electricity, propane, septic). I only know this because about every time I talk to him that's what he's always b****ing about. On the other end of the spectrum our bill is usually about $25 a month.

That's what I do as well. I got a pair of APC 3KW units and a 1400W unit. All are in my "datacenter" racks in the basement:

My furnace, stove and water heater are all LP powered, so that provides some relief. My power bill has never got into the 4 digits as I read some here have seen, but still, I'm averaging close to 5000kw a month during the summer and 3000kw in the winter.

I'm thankful that power is pretty cheap around these parts at $0.010 per kwh all inclusive, so my monthly bill is typically in the $200s during the winter and $300/400s in the summer. I looked at solar, but man, I'd need a lot of panels and inverters! If the technology keep improving, I might really look at that one day.

Wow, that's amazing! Sure wish I could pull that off one day with smart technology and solar/wind. I know I'm a carbon hog right now and I sure would like to improve on that without compromising living comfort.

This has been a pretty interesting and timely thread...

Although I think the genny pclausen is considering (in his first post) is a really nice unit (and tells me he has a lot more money then I do!!), I'd like to present an alternative. Buy a second (used) tractor to run a PTO generator exclusively. A used CUT or UT and PTO generator combination may be quite a bit less money then a dedicated whole house generator. You wouldn't really need 4WD...just a bare bones tractor, which should keep the purchase price reasonable. A tractor with adequate PTO HP to run a 30kW PTO genny is going to require 60 PTO HP (more or less).
This would keep the generator somewhat mobile and, when (and if) it comes to selling the equipment, you'd have more options.

I really like that John Deere unit on a trailer with the 250gal tank built in. May just buy one. For one it would give me the portable fuel tank I always wanted, two, I could "loan " the unit to friends in need, being it's on atrailer and three , it's a top quality unit that will be usuable for the next 30 yrs. My current 20kw Kohler diesel, liq cooled , 1800 rpm is mounted in a motorcoach. The Kohler is almost 15 yrs old and runs and looks like new. I maintain it like an airplane. But being it is attached to a 25 ton coach, not real portable, though it has a 300gal fuel tank.
That Deere still seems "cheap" , cause I always scan my rental place when they have them for sale and they aren't much under $10,000. I see them routinely with 6-8000 hrs on them. A Kubota LowBoy 6600w diesel ,liq cooled, 3600rpm is $7000- no wheels, 8gal tank. SO this Deere is a bargain. Thanks Mr. Clausen. Nice Adcom/Crown gear above. We ran that same generator in our spray foam rig and in 2000 hrs never had a single problem. It was so good on fuel we hardly ever ran a shore power cable unless the job was large and power easily accessible. I plan to get one of these for a whole house standby and built a sound intenuated enclosure. Great great unit.
