John Deere 314 freebie

So.. A friend of mine bought a 314 for home and garden..only issue was the prior owner had disassembled it to have it restored. Also told him it needed a new Harmonic balancer.. which I don't see..since my Jim Dandy runs the exact 14hp Kohler and the 322 we had back in the 90's didnt have one.. comes with two mowing decks. My question relates to the Hydraulic lift.. I noticed this one only has one arm for this on the left side. MY 322 and my brothers 318 both had dual controls. So I am of course wonder if it will be possible to add one. Thus I can use the blade we kept from the 322 and have both lift and tilt controls when using it . No way am I passing up on this deal, I said freebie...but actually its a trade.. shortly after buying the Deere he found a Terra Pro in mint condition with tiller and mower and front blade mount..just no blade..and I happen to have one.. lucky dog got it for $800!!! so it's gonna be an even trade, blade for 314.. I attached a pic showing the Control arm on the left. Picking it up on Friday

Those tractors only had a single spool of hyd control. I do believe you can add a 2 spool or even 3 spool of control using parts from a 318 or a 140H3. The 318 has twin levers, hence 2 spool, the 140h3 has 3 levers. You might need to have a few custom lines made up to plumb it all up. He also might have ment the engine needed new balance gears, which are inside the block. Most rebuilders leave them out as they have the nickname of grenade gears. When thier bearings fail, they trash the block by exiting out the side. They just help deal with some harmonic vibration, barely noticiable from the seat if at all and not worth the chance of a massive failure. Finally got time to run over and bring the 314 home. So the full story, Original Owner was going to restore... stroke, bed ridden... so inherits and decides he doesn't want it.. sells to his friend for $200 not the $500 that was mentioned. His friend is my College buddy and fellow homesteader.. who needs a Push Blade fab'd for his Terra Pro.. which I happened to have a spare blade..just a few mods to make it work.. The issue with the engine was the magnetic clutch. After removal he dropped something on it and messed it up... The cover being dented, so they cut it off... magnet side looks ok..but wonder the best way to test it..

found a 314 for parts. Engine is not the original.. needs a starter. The JD PTO would not fit the shaft. But other than that..I am told he ran back in DEC. So from it I will transfer the seat, mowing deck and pto to the freebie and I will have a mower. This one, I will fab a seat, and add a starter, I think I have one here already. And use it for pushing, pulling plowing etc.. until I can rebuild an original kohler. Though I am serious in thought to redoing an 18hp kohler I have and installed it in it. Thus a lil more power for the heavy stuff... all accounted for... JD 4100, 74 Jim Dandy, and two 314s....

surely someone out there in tractorbynet land has a 314 they can take pics of and share !! showing how the engine is properly mounted.. my web searches have been less than forth coming
