John Deere 4230 Quad Range gearbox problem

We have a 4230 John Deere with a Quad Range for sale near to us but according to the owner the tractor has a gearbox problem. The gearbox wont select any gears. The problem must be inside the box, because the owner says the shifters works fine it just isn't selecting any gears. Someone told him it is just two bolts on one of the shafts inside the gearbox, that is loose or broken. I know it is not a lot of info, but has anyone experienced something similar on a JD quad range gearbox?

Possibly either the traction clutch or pinion shaft in differential has failed. Will tractor try to move with diff. lock pedal is depressed? I don't remember any two(2) bolts that have a history of failing in trans. I'm a former JD dealer service manager having been employed at a JD dealership from '66-'87

Can you pin point which transmission is not working? The ranges A, B, C, D or the speeds 1, 2, 3, 4
Does it have a Reverser?

Thanks for the reply s. There is another buyer that has the first option on the tractor, but if we get to purchase the tractor I will definitely have a closer look. I now have some things to look for when going to view the tractor. Thanks

Zebrafive
Quad-range trans. didn't have a reverser similar to today's tractors. It does have a hyd hi-lo.

You should test drive a 40,50 or 55 series JD rowcrop tractor. There are several good reason's the previous mentioned series used tractors bring "premium prices" when they sell.
