I'm guessing that the photo in post #5 shows the belt routing correctly.

Yes that is the way I had the new and old belt routed. The spring feels very stiff I will have to remove the drive shaft and see how that pulley is this weekend.

Put your pics on the same device you use to be on the TBN site here (phone or computer).

Then click the "Go Advanced" button next to the "Post Quick Reply" and you will see the "Manage Attachments" button.

Click that and you will then see "Add Files" and where you can browse to find the pic you want to "Upload".

About all there is to it.. follow the prompts.

Well got into the deck today and all the pulleys are tight and are not loose or wobble. But the pulley that has the tension spring is good but the attachment arm that the pulley is bolted to was loose where it bolts down thru the mower deck. I took it off and there is a piece of hard steel tubing the bolt spins on and this fits inside the arm of the tensioner. The hole to which it fits in looks egg shaped?? I don't know if it suppose to or is wore that way. I can't seem to get my pics to load for some reason maybe someone has one or has taken one apart and can help me? But this is the only thing on this deck that had any wobble at all on any of the pulleys.

Problem if loose.. think you found at least part of your problem.

Replace the worn parts.. might be more than just the bushing key #11

Where to buy the parts at John Deere? Are they still available? Also what is the part number for #16 that is where the bushing fits in and it is egg shaped. Is it suppose to be egg shaped?

Get parts at a Deere dealer, and looks like Sloane is nearby.

Can find part numbers online at the jdparts site:

That arm #16 is M112281, and it needs to be a snug fit on the pins (bolts) for the idler pulley to run true to the belt. Replace any part that is worn that prevents the good fit.

Your experience with this deck should improve.. :drink:

Thank You so much beenthere I will call Sloan tomorrow and see if I can get that stuff ordered, meanwhile today I'm going to go back over everything and double check. I might as well get another belt the new one was chewed up some but wasn't cut and the old one does have some cracks a slice or two in it. Ok have a GREAT day and I get busy!!!!

Thinking today about your idler arm egg shaped, inspired me to pull the 54 deck off my 455 as I knew I needed to change the belt as it had some cracking and a chunk out of it.

No play found in the idler arm but to change the belt I removed the idler arm from the deck and found no wear, but did find the idler pulley with a bad bearing. Will replace with a new one.. hope to get it tomorrow from the dealer.

Will pack a bit of grease around that bushing when it goes back together.
