john deere 4300 compact sync reverser problems

My 2000 deere 4300 sync reverser compact tractor forward - reverse lever is moving when clutch is pressed or released. I noticed they are both on the same shaft in the trans. but this does not seem normal I just bought this lemon of a tractor and trying to work out all the bugs. thans for any input.

Some pictures would really help. Guessing there is a solid shaft for one function, probably the clutch, that runs through a tube/shaft, which is probably for the reverser function. Just sounds like a lack of lube there, and it's binding/gaulded some. Try looking for a grease zerk(s) on the cross shaft. If that is the case, it's quite common on Ag. tractors.
