I have a 1999 John Deere 4400 tractor and the starter is getting electricity but is not spinning over the tractor. I can hear it click when I turn the key but nothing happens. All battery connections are good and clean and tight. Is there a relay somewhere that goes bad. It worked good yesterday and went to start today with no go. Thanks for any insight.

There is probably a relay on the starter itself, similar to the way new car are done that has failed. I would suggest taking it off(the whole starter) and take it to a alternator/starter shop to get tested. They may also be able to rebuild it for you.

Have someone else hold the key in the start position and smack it with a hammer. If it starts then there are internal problems. But like he said taking it off and getting it tested is for sure. Don't know how many of my poor drivers I've made get under a truck and beat a starter with a rock to save a road call.

Does anyone know where the solenoid is for the starter on these things.

What is your battery voltage before and during crank/start attempts ?

I'm sure you checked this, but lets start with the battery... What is the voltage when you try to crank it over? Is this the OEM battery? I have a 4400 and it is on its second battery already. (actually third, one was replaced under warrentee..)

The battery was new this summer. I tapped on the starter as someone suggested and it fired up.

that starter is definetly toast

I used to do business with an old boy who owned a shop that rebuilt alternators, generators, and starters. All kinds & sizes. He told me the "ole hammer tap to the starter" usually meant there was a flat spot on the commutator or worn brushes, both of which required a rebuild. Pull the starter and rebuild or replace. Nothin's more upsetting than a piece of equipment that won't start!
