John Deere 4520 case 495
Hi. I own a JD 4520 with a 4 in 1 FEL. Controlling the 4 in 1 function is a 2 part process: I first need to press a switch on the panel on the fender, which directs flow to the joystick. On the top of the joystick, there is a round switch. If I press this switch top of centre the bucket opens, opposite when I press the bottom of this button. The hydraulics for the 4 in 1 function run out of a box on the rear of the tractor. Within this box their is a valve I can turn to release pressure from the system.
My question: I am looking at buying a log splitter running off the hydraulics. The rear hydraulics have quick fit valves, 3/8" I assume. Now would I have to control flow out of the hydraulic "box" from the joystick switch, or is their an open flow out of here after I first activate the flow from the switch on the fender? I hope it's the latter.
Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Thanks.

If you can run the 4 in 1, then I believe you can activate the button and supply flow to the log splitter IN port.

The OUT/tank line should go to tank.

Is your 4 in 1 valve rated for continuous operation? Can the switch be locked on for continuous?

Unfortunately, can't lock on. Springs back to centre when released.
There is a cable running down the joystick from the switch. Just hard to see where it goes. Suspect if it runs into "box" where hydraulics output, then I'd need to operate with switch on joystick to get flow.

It's up to you, but you can change how the switch operates.

One type switch for clamshell, and another switch for continuous operation, if the solenoid can be used in continuous mode.

The guy up the road has the same tractor and the way his works is, the switch on the fender turns the remotes on and off. The control for it is the loader valve when holding the switch in and moving loader control left or right.

That will not work to supply a continuous flow to the log splitter.

He needs a lock on switch to supply continuous flow if the valve can handle 100 % duty cycle or continuous flow.

No it well not work for a splitter. The only way he could use a splitter with his set up right now is to tape the button and tie the loader lever to one side. The other way would be a new set of remotes.

Thanks for the advice guys. Switch on joystick can open clamshell independently, with no need to move joystick/ control left or right ( this curls and uncurls bucket). Unfortunately can't lock switch to on position and is nice JD oem switch, fitting nicely in joystick, so don't really want to tamper with it. Seem may have to go with petrol driven splitter.
Thanks again.

Do you mean that you can not find the hot wire to the solenoid valve and add a switch just for the log splitter.

That is what I would do.
