Greetings! I was happily mowing grass with my JD 455 diesel when the mower suddenly shutdown, then two seconds later there was a pop sound from under the hood and the dash lights went out. Apparently the fuel shutoff solenoid failed and short circuited. It melted some of the solenoid and the solenoid's wire connector before one of the main 15A fuses blew.
I replaced the solenoid and all the fuses, but now the tractor will not throttle up past the minimum idle RPM. The throttle lever is firmly connected through the throttle cable to the fuel injection pump, but adjustment to the lever have no effect at all on the engine speed. This has got to be related to the short circuit, but I don't know where to focus my attention. Is the fuel injection pump electrically powered? Will the tractor even idle if the fuel injection pump has failed? Is there another sensor I can check that could prevent the tractor throttle from having any control function? I should mention, the new fuel shutoff solenoid works great and I can hear the fuel pump under the seat running then I turn the key on. The tractor will idle for several minutes if I let it. All help is appreciated.
