How much should I expect to pay at a dealer for a JD 48 backhoe for my 4300? I plan on buying new. I have PowerBeyond on the tractor already. Should I let the dealer install it?

I had a 48 hoe on a 4600 a few years ago. As I recall adding the hoe at purchase increased the price by about $3K. A friend of mine said he priced one last year at a local dealer and it was $3800.00 installed.

If it were me making the purchase I would have the dealer install it. The reasoning behind this is; I had an 850 hoe attachment installed on a 4475 S.S. several years ago. When I went to the dealer it was sitting in the shipping crate. I was going to have him load on my trailer and I would put it on myself. Then, he said if I brought then S.S. in he would service it while doing the install. I decided to go ahead with that plan.

After three days at the dealer I got a call. There was a defect with the backhoe unit and they had to get another in. Two days later I picked up the machine, tested and ready to go.

Now, I could have taken that unit home and completed the install, have to get rid of the shipping crate, and discover the prolblem. I'm sure it would be covered under warranty, but then I would have had to make the return and pick-up the new unit, transport it home and repeat the process.

Do you happen to know of the dealer your friend got prices from? Was it in PA?

hhw, are you sure that wasn't 6800 instead of 3800?

I will make a phone call tomorrow to find out the dealer, and I will dig through my old receipts for the purchase info.

To: jgbanshee, I had a 48 installed on my 4410 (pretty much the same unit as the 4300) about a year ago. I bought the tractor and backhoe along with several other pieces of equipment (all new) as a package deal and paid about $6,800 for the 48 including installation.
I don't know if you're aware of it but there have been some problems with the rear axle housing breaking from the stress of the backhoe. This is rare but I know of at least one person to whom this has happened.
JD now has a "Sub-Frame" kit to correct this. It connects the rear axle assembly to the frame and locks it all together. The part lists for $374 and takes about an hour for the dealer to install.
Not sure if it's something everyone needs, but I got it ordered, didn't want to take any chances. sully167

I found my old receipt for the 4600 purchase. breaks down like this;

Date April 2000
4600 R-4's $18,562
460 FEL $3203
toothbar $300
48 B.H. $5440.
Total $27,505

Obviously, I confused the FEL and BH prices. I bought the unit at Foremost in Harrisburg, PA. Ownership has changed hands since then, but I still do business there, I like the way they treat me when I come to research possible purchases.

As to my buddy having a 48 installed for $3800, if you guessed FEL and BH reversal again, you would be pretty close. As it turns out he bought a returned/refurbished 460 with T.B and had it installed. /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

Where are you near in the N.E. As I recall there are a few good size dealers near Scranton. Isn't Sepella (spelling?) near honesdale? As I recall they moved a lot of J.D. equipment, including the Comm. units. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
