I recently acquired a John Deere Model 51 broom for my BX and was hoping to weld up a mount to mate to my quick attach and get sweeping. I was very disappointed to find the Deere broom rotates the wrong direction /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif. does anyone have knowledge on this model of broom that could offer some advice? Can I flip the gear box upside down etc? Any input would be appreciated as this broom would make an awesome addition to the BX.

Thanks in advance.

Now, the Deere 51 broom I rented last fall had the rotation right. Can't imagine what would have happened that it would be wrong on yours. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

The ones I am familiar with are PTO operated.

To me, it sounds like your Kubota's shaft runs in the opposite direction to Deere's. Also, is the shaft running at the same speed?

It may be possible to flip the gearbox, I don't know. It will depend on the bolt pattern of the gearbox. Deere used to source that brush head from Sweepster. If the Deere 51 is based on Sweepster's CTM broom, it has a 3:1 gearbox.

This will be a complicating factor since the gearbox is a reduction gearbox. For instance, if it is a 3:1 gearbox you will speed up the broom head considerably when flipping the gearbox around. This is bad because it is important to keep your brush speed as low as possible, especially when sweeping dirt from pavement.

I don't want to rain on your parade, but you may have a huge engineering job ahead of you. It isn't impossible to overcome, but likely very challenging.

Two issues come to mind. First, do the PTO speeds and rotations match? If the speeds and rotations match then has someone installed a reversing reducing gearbox that you don't need? If the speeds don't match then you could install a reversing reducing/increasing gear box to change both the rotation and speed. If the speeds match but not the rotation, then you could install a reversing gearbox between the PTO and the sweeper gearbox. I don't see how turning the existing gearbox upside down will solve your problem.

I had a similar problem when I converted a 3ph tiller to front mount. In doing so both the PTO speed and rotation became mismatched so I installed a reversing reducing gearbox between the PTO and the tiller gearbox and that solved the problem.

I'll be interested to learn how you solve this dilemma. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Thank you for all of your replies. It is a pto driven broom and now that you mention it I believe it is not geared down. I will have to verify that the next time I'm out in the shop. It seems that when I spun the shaft by hand the broom rotated rather fast for the published 8.4:1 gearbox it is supposed to have. This is the broom here. http://www.stonehams.com/51in_broom.html I was hoping someone online had experience with it before tore into a losing battle.

Thanks again.

this photo shows the reversing/reducing gearbox I used to overcome the problem I had with the tiller. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Wow, you just made me sick. I was at an estate sale last fall and the guy who passed away had about 4 of those in his basement with all of the other goodies. I had no idea what it was and passed on them. The last day of the sale it was as much as you could put in a paper sack for 5 bucks. Now knowing what they are I'm sick....

You may be able to flip the central worm gearbox over. Probably easiest to just leave the broom assembly intact and rotate the whole thing left for right around the input driveshaft. This will reverse the sweeping direction relative to the ground. The holes for the bearing where the driveshaft goes through the back of the shell may need to be re-worked a bit to deal with the offset of the worm drive being flipped.
