Since it is a temperature sensor, the resistance will change between when it is hot and cold. Did you try putting it in a hot glass of water? If yes, what was the resistance then?

Looking at JDparts the temperature switch range is 100 degrees Fahrenheit to 122 degrees Fahrenheit.

I did not measure it when hot, only at room. I did compare the bad sensor to the new one. The bad sensor had an electrical connection to the brass housing, thus to tractor chassis ground. It seems to be in the range of 5-30 ohm, but I was not trying hard to find the best tractor chassis ground.

So this is the failure mode. The new sensor did not have this shorted path. This sensor seemed to fail after some hard freezes we had, even though I keep my tractor inside an enclosed tractor barn.
