Been reading this informative site for for quite some time and have learned a lot.

I looked at a used John Deere 5300 4X4(no FEL) with some 3500+ hours on it. It's been really used. Lots of brush hogging!!! The pto will not disengage. I tried everything. I crawled under it and the lever/linkage appears intact. The joy stick is also inoperable. The cables look good from below. Problem appears to at the stick where cables hook to it. Could these be expensive to fix? Need to know before I make offer. Of course, will be contacting the local JD Deere for advice tomorrow!!!!

Thanks in advance for your responses.

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays from the ski country.

Welcome to TBN.

On the joystick problem did you check the lock lever on the joystick?

Jeff: Yes I did check it. It's not the problem. I looked through a crack in the boot and I can see a plactic piece that is broke or loose in there. Didn't have a screw drive to take the casing apart. Dealer said it would not be a huge item.

Thanks!!!!

I have been thinking about the PTO problem. Is it fully engaged all the time even with something on it or is it just turning when the tractor is idleing with nothing on the pto. I seem to remember these tractors have a pto brake which may have failed allowing the PTO to turn.

Jeff: The pto won't disengage despite throwing the lever into the off position. It will only stop turning when the clutch is pushed in. Dealer say the pto clutch is a dry one and there is something that won't allow it to disengage. Worse case scenario is that the tractor would have to be broke in half to fix which would cost $1000 to $1500.
So I guess I need to keep looking for another tractor. Thanks for the help.

the pto clutch is a dry disk.if the tractor had been used on a rotary cutter a lot the disk or steel plates may be warpped .very common problem with dry pto clutches .the estimate to repair is low if this is what is wrong

Stinkydog: A question though....can I adjust the linkage enough to allow it to disengage???? Or must I have the dry clutch replaced if it is warped?????

Thanks for the information.

You need to have it replaced. Best case scenario in this situation is to figure on a full blown replacement. Take the cost of the tractor minus the repairs and that is where you need to be on the price. I can't even count enough times I've heard some guy buy something like this thinking it was an easy fix only to find out it needed the full fix and more. There are alot of good tractors out there. Unless you can get that one dirt cheap I'd wait and find one that isn't in as bad of condition.

It is a 1994. The hood has hole in as well from a falling tree. That a $500 item at least!!!!!

Personally I wouldn't give that much for it. With all of those problems he'd probably be lucky to get $7500 for it at the dealer. I think $500 is probably light on the price of the hood. I just put one on my 6415 and list price was $1500. I got it for $1100. Unless you're a good mechanic and can do all of this work yourself I think I'd shy away from it. The most I would pay for it would be around that $7500 mark depending on how bad I wanted the unit and how much I wanted to gamble. You may fix that pto for $5 and it may cost you $5000 to fix it. If you can do the work yourself you can probably come out ok. But if you are the mercy of the dealer then that shop labor adds up in a BIG hurry. You wouldn't be the first guy that took their tractor in for a simple fix and the repair bill wound up being more than the tractor was worth. /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

Just for comparison I pulled up a nice 5300 with canopy, great shape, good paint, and 3000 hours for $15,000. I'd sure rather spend the $15k on something in good shape and running good than I would spend even $7500 on one that is a big gamble.

Price on Machinefinder.com ranged from $12K to $15.5K for a MFWD machine with those hours. One of these was in PA.
Well, at $11.5 and needing a PTO clutch (figure $2K), that tractor isn't a steal.
Why do you want a tractor this big? Are you a farmer?

Roy: No, not a farmer but I want to run a 7 1/2 foot snow blower. So I need a tractor with Class 2 3 point lift and some extra Hp to run it. Also will be doing some logging in a few years. Seems like the utility tractors are a better value than the compacts.

Cowboydoc: Thanks for the advice. You have been most helpful!!!!!

I have found a 5300 with a loader and a Curtis Soft cab at a local dealer for $16,900. The only drawback is that it has those weird turf tires. The dealer said it would cost $2000 for ag tires and rims.

Merry Christmas!!!!
