John deere 5520 clutch problems

I have a 5520 and recall a service bulletin that I think puts the clutch free play at 3/8" to 1/2". You would need to double check that since it's from memory but the free play is almost nothing. A lot of people don't seem to believe this and keep it at 3/4" or whatever and that causes problems around here. Just an FYI.

I found a note in my records that clutch free play is 1/2". That's all and apparently more free play will cause problems. A dealer I met wanted to set it at more because he thought it should be more. Since he had no technical basis for that I stayed with the service update from Deere and a half inch.

How much is your clutch pedal free travel now and do you know what it has been in the past?

I purchased a 5520N tractor two years ago and I knew it had a weak clutch, but so far have plowed and tilled 15 acres of hard ground. These critters have obviously a weak power transmission system in them and the point is mute that they kinda suck.
However I love my narrow tractor! Goes where the big boys can't.
Long story short, have to replace the clutch.
Got it through my head that the tractor will have to be split and have a modern shop to do such a thing.
Done a whole bunch of crazy things before, clutches included in many large excavation equipment, but never a farm tractor like this one.
Anyone ever tear into one of these orchard 4x4 tractors to replace a clutch?
Two or more heads are better than one.

There are lots of clutch replacement threads around here and while I have always viewed it as a voodoo kind of thing it appears easier than anticipated. When you do split this, the big thing seems to be supporting the halves as you roll one end away from the other. Search it a bit, and I'll try to find some threads later today as well and post them here. It doesn't have to be a JD5520N and can be a Ford or whatever since they all split and look pretty much the same.

Take pictures of your split, do a running commentary and that will draw in lots of people with lots of free advice. Plus, link this thread to it so I can find it. Do you have a cab?

Also, I have the service bulletin that states correct clutch free play and will post it if I can find it. It's also on the net so should be out there somewhere.

Here's a thread on splitting a tractor. It's a great thread with excellent photos and commentary on splitting for a clutch.

I'm sure there are threads on splitting a 5510 but you can learn more from the above thread. I have never done a split but from those who have the general opinion is that it's not that big of a deal. When I needed a clutch in an 8N Ford 20 years ago the price from a local mechanic was reasonable enough that I had him do it. I think it was four hours labor plus parts on that simple no-cab tractor.
