John Deere 650

A neighbor has a JD 650 for sell. Aesthetically it looks pretty good but it doesn't run and it's been through a flood.
I pulled the dipstick and water squirted out of the hole for a good 3-5 minutes. YIKES!!
Pulled the oil plug and water poured out for a good 60 secs before it turned into oil.
The good side is I could turn the engine a bit with a wrench on the crank shaft. and the tans seems to not have any water in it.
They are selling it along with a finish mower, brush hog and auger. Asking $1500.00. Seems a bit much considering.
They don't know the year model and for the life of me I can't find a serial/VIN search online at all. (VIN - CH0650S019516)
What's your thuoghts and can anyone help with the VIN?

Run away,, that price is a LOT more thant the $50 I would offer,,

There is little chance that the machine will ever run like a non-flooded JD650,,
I have a JD 650,, everything works correctly, I have had it about 3-4 years,, and I paid less than the price they are asking,,,

You need to decide for yourself how much trouble and expense you want to go through (if any) for that tractor. You need to decide if the included implements make the package worthwhile. The tractor may only need fresh oil and a battery. It may need completely rebuilt. You pays your money and you takes your chances.

So from your link I can assume this one is a 1986 model? Since the serial # is 19516 ?
1986: 19001
1987: 22501
I would clearly not pay 1500.00 considering the condition.
Finding rebuild kits for that engine is sketchy and pricy. Probably not worth my time.

Finish mower, brush hog and auger are worth $1,500 - the tractor is free. Was it a fresh water or salt water flood and how long ago? I would offer $1,300 and see what happens. Drain oil and fuel - add fresh - and see if it starts. If yes, change all the other fluids. If not,part it out.

Yanmar is first quality. I don't think the price too crazy. I'm fairly certain you could even part it out and make some money if it came to that.

If you get it running, you will have a solid reliable tractor with no computers or emmisions garbage. And no payments!

I'm a big fan of those series of tractors, but if the water was in there for over a year: YIKES!

Why they did not try to save it by getting the water out ASAP, I don't know. But even fresh water can do some serous damage and corrosion given some time. . I think you were saved by the guy that bought it.

Sad for these folks.
I've known the family all my life. The current owners grandfather built this house next to a creek that has never gotten out its banks.
Sept last year we had massive rains, trees and debris piled up against a bridge about 1/2 mile downstream causing it to rise up and flood their home, barn and fields.
They had no flood ins and ran out of money trying to repair and have had to sell it all and move. Like my family, theirs has been there over 100 years.

Yea, that water pouring out scared me and pricing rebuild parts was tough and pricey.
Should have offered 1000 before anyone else talked to em. Hindsight!!

It's a parts tractor. The engine internals are shot. If the block and head have no cracks and are salvageable, you may get $500 for those in a sale.

The 650 is a nice machine, but that 2T80 engine is a total goner having that much water for that long of a time. This is worse than galvanic corrosion.

A full engine rebuild kit and labor would put you out around $3,000 at a minimum. Not at all worth it on a 2-cly diesel.

Parting out the 650 for the sheetmetal, frame, tires head and block would fetch a tad more than the $1,500, but you would have to stare at it for a year or two before it all goes.

If the attachments are in good shape and you can either use them or sell them each yourself, offer $850 for the whole lot and tractor. The worse is getting a no for an answer. Then response back with $850 again saying, reconsider in a week or two.

There are tractor salvage places around the country. Not sure what region you are in. WKY salvage is one of the bigger ones. Down in AL, you would get $1,000 for a non-running compact JD (aka Yanmar) machine.

There is a good chance here that all the attachments were under water too. I think you did ok by not buying.

I agree I would not pay $1500 for that machine. When was the flood that it went through? The time frame that it sat with water in the motor, tells a lot about the potential condition of the motor internals. The longer it sat full of water, the less I would want it which translates to the less I would be willing to pay.
Plan on a multi flush of all fluid containing areas and lines.
