John deere 70hp? Mahindra?

That is true he did say he was looking at john deere. What got me started on Montana is that Montana uses a John Deere engine in the 70 horse version of its tractor. but since you are correct and he did say he was looking for a john deere I will stop posting in this thread

I came across differently than what I intended. In the past I've been smacked down for offering other brands for a poster to consider other than what they listed. I don't think I even properly stated that I think Mahindra would be a great buy for him as long as he has a full sized, full service Mahindra dealer close to him. In my area there are so many JD, Kubota and New Holland dealers that compete heavily against each other, there is literally no price advantage to going with a Mahindra, Montana, Branson or Kioti. As long as that is the case, I don't ever see me spending my money on the lesser represented brands.

I've been reading all the responses to your question....everyone is going everywhere with their responses....first, if you want a 60-70hp tractor, I'm pretty sure you're not worried about leaving marks in your yard, as far as PTO, get one with both 540 and 1000rpm capability (you never know, do you?), as far as weight is concerned, screw "compaction" as your 70 hp tractor is not going to be able to give the earth a good working unless you can put all 70 horses to the ground...if you want light, then get a 35 hp tractor...this is common sense....by all means get a good FEL (if you think the heaviest thing you will lift is 1500 lbs, then get on that will lift 3000...). Oh and lastly don't forget to see if you can get a backhoe with the tractor....not necessarilly now but you might in the future.... Bottom line, drive them all, go heavy, if it feels right and $$$ make cents (pun intended), buy it no matter what color it is....then don't look back... good luck. BobG in VA

I do have to disagree. Based on your suggestions, getting a 70 hp Foton with a Perkins engine from Rural King on sale would be by far the best tractor. You will not find any other tractor with the same weight and options for the dollar. Heck, you can get a fully enclosed cab with heat and A/C for the price of a Branson, Montana or Kioti open station tractor. I do think there has been a common theme of buying something with a local dealership that is more than a lawn and garden center or a roadside stand to serve you after the sale.

Believe me, a Foton Tractor King is tempting due to all you get for the money and the weight is even more than Mahindra. However, ask where you can get it repaired if there is problems and that is where, at least locally for me, the problems start. Right now there is likely a better chance of buying a lesser known tractor and having the company disappear than anytime in the recent future. Economic conditions have many in deep trouble. Having said that, the original poster's options of JD or Mahindra are certainly not brands that are even remotely likely to go under.

Thank you for your response. I am going to however quit talking about this subject because you were 100 per cent correct. The original poster asked about what size john deere he needed. He did not ask about different brank of tractors. There are other thread he can ask about the different brands. He can ask in here about other options if he wants but for now I am going to get out because I dont have the practical experience with JD to answer his questions.
