the other day raking with a john deere 820 the right shifter wouldnt shift into park or II so i pulled the top of the trans off and found a 2 inch long by maybe 1/4 inch diameter tube laying in the shift fork which was keeping the shift lever from being able to shift. Does any body have any idea what that could be?? The trans shifts fine now but that piece of tube came from somewhere.

820 with 2 cyl only park function was locking both turning brakes. It would be interesting to see photo of tube Banditman removed from shifter rail tab.

The 3 cylinder 820, 1968-73 model we can presume?
Most likely part of a transmission lube line.

Will need to hear back from banditman to know for sure.

TT may have it pegged correctly.

The three point arms on this tractor have never worked right. They kind of bounce and shake when you raise them could this be the cause?

Probably not related. That sounds more like the lift cylinder has a leak/bad oring or the pump has a bad piston/valve. Does the 3pt stay in the up position after the tractor has been shut off?

Poor trans shifting & hyd's on a '73 JD 820 have no affect on each other. How many hrs of use since hyd filter was changed & hyd oil suction screen che3cked/cleaned?

The screenshot doesn't mention cleaning the suction screen. That's normally done every other oil change.

I tend to disagree on that. I think it's more often done when hydraulic problems occur and nothing else seems to help.

i did it before i started haying probably 20 hrs on the filter and cleaned screen

And I disagree. If we wait for symptoms before cleaning screens, the cavitation damage to the hydraulic pump rotor has already started. It's called micro-pitting and will wear the rotor out prematurely.

The jerking and jumping of the 3pt hitch are classic signs of suction oil starvation. First thing to do is check the oil, change the spin on filter, and clean the screen. 3pts operation is normally very smooth.

The pipe on top of the shifter sounds like a separate problem.

Good, But was it still shifting then? Something changed in the transmission when it stopped shifting. That pipe came from somewhere.... and that means particles. Maybe enough to clog the filters and maybe not...

I was wondering if original poster could get a picture of the pipe found in shifter. Might help to identify it. If there is internal leakage due to misplaced or broken pipe, it would help explain the jerky hitch.
