John Deere 850 crack in water jacket

Before you go ahead with any kind of repair, have you been able to figure out why the block cracked, in the first place ?

It is actually a tractor im looking at buying. A John Deere 850 tractor. It apparently has a small crack in the water jacket. It was previously jb welded. Should I swear clear? I was hoping I would just be able to replace the part and gasket like I did on an outboard motor some years ago. Tractors are not my forte so I just don't know.

They've got some new rods for welding a cracked intake, in place, on a Cummins. Pursue that. I have welded it and played with it. But the new rods sounded like the way to go. Especially since you want to cold weld and not heat it to temp.

Have you checked for coolant in crankcase? Due to 850 engine having wet piston liners I be concerned about cracks in block webbing between liners.

Yes, and/or foam on the dipstick.

Can you ask the previous owner how well / how long the JB weld worked?

After engine has set not running for about 24 hrs loosen engine oil pan plug about 3 turns then wait a few minutes for liquid to escape between plug & pan threads. If coolant is present in pan it should leak out before any oil drips out.
