James- If JD will replace the battery, let them do it, then buy an Optima and install it. Never hurts to have a spare battery, just keep it charged and ready to go.....

I have been lucky - 2 years for my 790 in March and no leaks.

If I may enter an opinion here. The problem is not with the battery overcharging. The problem is the location of the battery in front of the radiator/oil cooler. The engine fan will pull the corrosive fumes from the battery area and suck them through the cooler and radiator. By going to a sealed battery (or a battery with non vented caps) you eliminate the fume problem and the corrosion will stop in most cases. This information is paraphrased from a DTAC solution describing a Product Improvement Program on 4000 series JD CUTs. Made sense to me. /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Make the switch to an Optima. You won't regret it. I got my yellow top from the nice folks at www.remybattery.com.

No more leaks or corrosion. Definitely money well spent.

In all fairness to JD, my strongbox did last six years.

I get none of that with my tractor and the fan pulls just like you mention. I have 400 hours and my radiator and oil cooloer are clean enough to eat off of. Neither the positive or negative terminals have even the slightest sign of corrosion. My neighbors JD 790 with 100 hours looks great on the outside, the battery compartment looks like a war zone. He did not even bother to go to the dealer, he just went to NAPA and picked up one of their batteries. Problem eliminated, the carnage left by the original battery is still quite apparent. Both of the factory cable ends rotted away and he has the clamp on style now which I don't like much but they are certainly a less expensive and a quick repair. Optima or other brands of sealed batteies are a good option and one that unfourtunarely is typically made after the damage has started.
