i am in the process of trading an LX5 john deere bushhog that i bought with my tractor. i decided to go with an aftermarket bushhog and my dealer is allowing me to trade it in towards other stuff for my tractor. after i got what i needed for the tractor i have about 400$ left over and need to get something of that value. was considering a chainsaw, as i need one. anyone have any opinions of JD saws? are they not a good buy? if they are which model and features should i consider?

I believe they're manufactured by Homelite, at least at one time.

They are good saws and not mfg by Homelite, which doesn't exist anymore. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif There have been a couple different mfg's of the Deere saws in the past, and they were not as good as the ones mfg for them now (Italian made). I've used them and they handle well. I had a bad experience with the bar on one, that wore away prematurely and don't know if it was due to an oiling problem or not. Deere replaced the bar and the saw, and the replacement did not wear away at the bar. I like them, although I stick with my Stihl as they are tried and true to me.

I've got a CS71 with a 24 inch bar. The salesman told me Olympic made them for Deere. It's pretty decent, have only had trouble with the recoil spring staying on the starter after two Years.
I also have a CS200 with a 16 inch bar it was made by Homelite and has been an excellent saw, I've had it for 5 years and have replaced several parts on it, the only one that wasn't my fault was the bearing going out on the tip of the bar.

Overall, I prefer Deere branded saws over the bigger names and I've cut with and been around a bunch of the brands.

I have a Sthil MS250 and a John Deere CS56 (if I remember the model # correctly) and I have been just as happy with the JD as I am with the Sthil. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif
