Re: John Deere Collector\'s Site

Thanks John, I've been meaning to check that out. Has anyone been to the John Deere Commons in Moline? We're planning a vacation this summer that will have us near there, so I'll just HAVE to stop in /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

Re: John Deere Collector\'s Site

Hi Rob,
Nope... haven't been there, but I do like the "50's" image, life seemed much simpler and more laid back...

Anyhow... I want to pick your automotive engineer brain.../w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

Can you break down the "Oil data sheet info" such as :
{examples}
Viscosity 40 degrees C................ 100 mm 2/s
Viscosity 100 degrees C...............14.0 mm 2/s
Total base number (TBN).............11 mg KOH/g
Sulfated ash level.......................1.23% wt
ex.
In other words, which items is "more" better and "less" better.
You can pick out the "important" spec's to look for...not all of them.

I'm trying to put a simple spreadsheet template together comparing oil stocks between the major refiners and of course the marketing tractor manufacturers.

Maybe you can answer by starting a new thread under "Oil, etc. area" like Oil Spec's...The real truth! /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif
Thanks Rob {You'll probably kill me for asking now.../w3tcompact/icons/tongue.gif}

Re: John Deere Collector\'s Site

Yikes John, you don't want much do you /w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif

My field is brakes, but in typical big company fashion there is probably more about brakes I DON'T know than what I do /w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif

There are probably a surprising few people in the whole world that know what this stuff means. The real experts are likely tucked away in the R&D centers of the major oil companies. Perhaps a few at the OE engine manufacturers, though so much expertise is outsourced to the supply base these days. The field is Tribology (friction) and lubricants. Like everything else, it's become very specialized.

Even organizations like SAE won't necessarily say what is better, they will only specify the test methods so the data from one manufacturer can be easily compared to the data from another. The SAE standards come from committees made up of experts from the field.

That said, I won't kill you for asking but I'm afraid I can't answer either. We need to find one of these "experts" and get a tractor for him/her to play on /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

Arrrggggggggghhhhhhh... {Is that how you spell it?}

Rob, I just knew you were going to be my savior.../w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

I did multiple searches of the web for content and got hung up with some of the "mumble jumble". I was hoping for an explanation in "layman's" terms...

So thank you anyhow Rob.../w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif
