Does anyone know of a good source for an engine for a 1976 John Deere model 4030???

I think that is a 329. You might check combine and cotton picker territory, alot of those engines were in harvesting equipment.

I will second the link to Wenger's of Myerstown. Wenger's has a good reputation.

It is a 329. I'm not 100% positive, but I THINK the Deere 4400 combine has a 329. (Maybe 4420's too) You might have better luck finding one of them in a tractor bone yard.

Yes, the engine is a 329 in the 4030 tractor. The 329 was used in the Deere 2840 tractor, as well as the 4420 combine. My information on the 4400 combine lists a 6-cylinder engine but the displacement as 239. That doesn't make sense. I am willing to bet that the first two digits are transposed in my source and the 4400 uses a 329, as well.

Deere built a 239 Cu in diesel, but it came much later than when the 4400 combine was around. The 239 was used in the 2355 and 2555 utilities, plus a few other models. It was offered with a turbo on some higher HP applications. It was a further development of the 219 cu in engine that was in the 2520, 2030, and 2440 tractors. I'm 99.9% sure the 4400 combine used a 329 cu in engine.

That is what I figured, too. I knew that the 239 was a 4-cylinder used in the later utility tractors. I guess that proof-reader for the Hot Line Farm Equipment Guide was thinking about other things when they got to the Deere 4400 combine.

Some of the 6600 combines used the 329 as well. Some had the 404 also.

Just curious, what happened to your engine? Is it missing, or just need a rebuild?

6600's with DIESEL 329's? A new one on me. Seems like there were a few gas 6600's. I could be wrong about that too. I recall that being a Chevy 6-cyl. Gas engines were once popular in combines. Combine fires were once VERY common.

Actually most all deere six's will go into that chassis. I wouldn't push it to much but that would mean the 404 as well as the 466 would bolt in. Now a good running 466 if taxed in that chassis would probably give you a lot of tranmission and rear end parts in an array you might not find desireable!
