I just purchased a used 955 which has sat outside since 1994, I want to get it cleaned up and was thinking about some fresh paint, where is a good place to buy some paint? Also what should I look for as far as an initial service or going over before I start to use it? It has 700 hours on it and has had service since new from dealership where he bought it. What manuals are must have for ownership of this 955?

This is my first Tractor and I find that this board is a great source of imformation, glad to be a part of the John Deere world!!:)

Thanks in advance,
James

Since I don't have a paint gun setup....

I've used Deere spray paint with good success - seems to be very good paint.

In my most recent touch up, painting where my bucket hooks were welded on, I used a primer from Tractor Supply (Valspar Implement Paint Primer), then used the Deere green for the final coats - came out very well.

I've also used the Tractor Supply Implement paint for my trailer (black) - also seems like a good paint.

Years ago I fixed up an old 332 which was in similar shape as your 955 using Deere paint - with proper prep work, it came out pretty good.

That was my initial thinking of just using a spray can but I think I might try to strip down the metal and use a spray gun, I will have to call around to the paint supply shops and see if they have a one step John Deere green that can be used kind of like the old enamel or laquer paints we used to use.

Thanks again for your help I guess I need to take some time and go all over her and see what I really have, lol.

Your Deere dealer should have paint in the quart cans as well as spray bombs.

Look on ebay for manuals. They are on there all the time.

Yes, the JD dealer sells the correct color paint, and it is a dream to spray! It's not cheap, but it's good stuff!

ON EDIT: I am talking about the quarts...

You would really be surprized how well the JD paint in a spray can is. it looks like it was shot from a gun. it is not like old crappy paint at home depot or lowes. it is high quality. its about 10 bucks a can. I painted my bucket after installing new hooks. and it was slick as the tractor hood. if not slicker....;)

Chris....:)

You can get JD green paint, both spray and liquid, from your dealer. As stated here, they both are excellent quality. I bought a couple gallons three or four months ago--seem to recall it's about $50 per gallon. Painted a trailer and touched up the tractor. I have no special skills, but it looks great.

If you are going to go thru the effort of stripping down the paint go all the way and do it right. Go down to the auto supply house and have them order you up some automotive paint. The shine you get is 100 times better than anything JD will sell you and the auto paint will not fade out nearly as quick. I had a friend that restored a B he used auto paint and his tractor looks sweet.

Is the Factory JD paint in gallons ready to spray? What kind of paint is it, enamel? Kind of a one step? Just curious. I thought about the whole automotive type paint job I have not deicided yet what to do, I really want it to look like an original factory paint job. If you look at the pics above you can see I will probably need to strip it down to bare metal and then prime, but im up in the air if I should base coat clear or just one step it.

Thanks

Yes that paint is kinda pricey but it definitely is very good paint

The 955 is a great tractor...I have had several with FEL and b/h. You
need the owner's manual and the workshop manual (TM1360) is great to
have. The I&T after-mkt manual is only fair at best. Try Ebay and
consider the PDF versions if you want to save some $.

Where can I find the PDF manuals? I looked on JD website and ofcourse couldnt find them, I find that their website is hard to navigate for some reason, lol. I really like the 955 it just looks bad but runs great. It was left outside for about the last 10 years which can just make a guy sick:( I havnt done much with it yet but I plan to start this week and go all over it.

I made the mistake and went with a buddy to go look at a 110 tlb and seen a 3720 :D :D :D cool turbo, lol.

I would not suggest clear coat, it pukes on most cars/trucks over 7 years old and I have scraped/sanded lots of it off
not a good thing at all

The BEST paint for the buck is at the John Deere dealer. It's PPG brand, packaged for Deere. It's the same acrylic enamel that's on the tractor. You'll pay double or triple the cost FOR THE VERY SAME PAINT at an auto paint supply house. It's the one thing Deere sells that's CHEAP. By staying with the brand/type that's already on the tractor, you minimize the possible complications of product incapatability. Not all paints will work over other types. There can be adverse reactions. I HIGHLY recommend using primer, paint, reducer, and hardener from same manufacturer. (remember that JD paint is PPG)

Paints from TSC are alkyd enamel and will quickly fade in sunlight compared to original paint.

Reducer (thinner) can be had through Deere, but isn't commonly stocked. Auto paint supply houses are a good source. NAPA sells Martin Seniour (sp?) brand. It's a good choice. Reducer from NAPA (for acrylic enamel) will work just fine. BE CAREFULL if you use hardener. It is VERY HARMFULL and/or LETHAL if exposed to enough of it. USe as directed. (Cover entire body/use fresh air breathing system...NOT a charcoal mask) I have symtoms of asthma from improper use of hardeners in VERY small dose.

Avoid uerethane (sp) enamels for the same reasons as hardeners. That, and they're tricky for a novice.

Clearcoat works best as part of a "system" (base coat/clear coat) They aren't all that complicated, but every step you add doubles the chance of problems. A novice painter needs simplicity, believe me. BTDT, got paint all over the T-shirt.

Single most important part of making a paint job look good is PREP WORK BEFORE THE PAINT FLIES!

You went to JDParts.com?

If you register, you can view the whole parts manual for your tractor
online. I bought a legal copy of it on CD from JD, but I do not remember
where I found it online. I found the PDF fiile of the service manual on
Ebay. JDParts.com is useful to get an ideal of parts pricing, but my
JD dealer beat the prices 98% of the time and I bought a LOT of parts.

Issues with the 955: front grille removal/replacement. Keeping
the HST pedal pivots properly lubed/adjusted. Electrical and mechanical
safety interlocks.
