Is there a good alternative to buying the paint from John Deere for hoods, fenders etc. for my 4100?

I dont know how good it is, but I use Rustolium John Deere green/ yellow. Seems to be a perfect match for me at least.

It is a very good quality paint. It is designed to be waxed over. It has a automotive grade finish unlike many other equiptment paints.

Yes, Rustoleum is good quality paint, but their JD green will become slightly "blueish" over time, especially if left in the sunlight a lot! ~~ grnspot

I've used Valspar in a rattle can for touch ups and repairs. The green seems to work and match well. Yellow is a bit off however, not much but you'll notice if you spray it over real Deere yellow.

I wasn't thinking properly when I posted my response. My alternative isn't something I would use for the actual tractor. Only for painting old attachments or what ever. If possible, I would buy the original john Deere paint by the quart and put in my air sprayer to paint actual tractor. Either that or the john Deere Oem rattle can from dealer. Personally I wouldn't skimp out on the actual tractor especially if doing a whole hood. Do it right the first time

Not if you want it to look good and last.

I used Van Sickle tractor and implement paint I got from the farm supply store. I bought it by the quart, used the Van Sickle hardner/catalyst and sprayed it through an HVLP spray gun. The hardner makes the paint a lot tougher, more chemical resistant, glossier and more resistant to fading and chaulking from sun exposure.

Ditto on the Van Sickle paint. I painted a tool box for dad's JD, and it was a good match (green). The MF red was right too.

The Van Sickle that I used was the "Premium" line and is an alkyd enamel. The hardner does contain isocyanates and requires the proper respirator to removed the nasty stuff you don't want to breathe. Last time I was at the farm supply store I noticed they are now carrying a new line of paint from Van Sickle as well. It's called "Ag and Fleet" and is a acrylic enamel that is very high gloss and is very durable. The Ag and Fleet line does require a special reducer and can also be used with a hardner catalyst. A clear coat is also available with this line. The whole acrylic enamel system is more expensive, so you have do decide how good is good enough and how much do you want to spend.

There is more than one John Deere original green paint. John Deere lightened the green color sometime around 1980. I know your tractor is a newer model than that but someone else with an older tractor needs to know.

Thanks for the replies. I went ahead and bought the green paint from John Deere (original) with the hardener. My buddy used to paint for a body shop. He is doing the body parts, all of which I have removed from the tractor and removed decals, etc. The wheels and mower deck (yellow) I am using a rattle can of Rustoleum. Haven't decided on the implements yet. I will determine that upon seeing the initial results. Hopefully, if I figure out how, I will post pictures.

I think the lighter paint you are referring to is Sabre Green. I checked the John Deere original paint code to get my paint. I believe I am a year or two prior to the switch to Sabre green.

I would second the Van Sickle line. Used it on my metal work on the aux hydraulic system SCV that I added to my JD 4720. Colors were as close as I could ask for.

The Sabre green is not a John Deere green. Some called them old & new JD green, or classic and new JD green.
