Ouch!! thats gotta hurt. /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif I've read about that happening several times but never seen what they were talking about. That shouldnt happen even if you were trying to pick up a house>>>>>>Right? that's what relief valves are for I assume. THanks for the pic
I wasnt there when it actually happened. A friend of mine had rented the machine to do some landscaping work in his yard. They had used the machine all day without a problem. At the end of the day he was driving it around the house to load it on the trailer. He saw a couple of small stumps (not from trees but bushes) . He replied "Let`s get our money`s worth out of this rental". Backed up to the first one dug it out in one scoop no problem. Moved towards the second one but didnt get close enough. He had the hoe almost fully extended and was trying to curl the bucket. I guess he was hacking away. I was told by a third party that the machine was rocking pretty good. Then the piston bent in one swift motion. Some explaining and $700 later everything was resolved. Make s the $10-$20 for insurance at the rental counter look good ..huh?

Yea a guy has to remember that these are not exactly a true big backhoe. If mine ever stops I just pull out and try another shot at it from a different angle or less of a bite. I'm amazed that these rental places ever get anything back in one piece the way I see people use equipment. I was at a guy's house once and he was just beating the tar out of this tractor with a loader cleaning up around his place. He said he didn't care he didn't own it. That's why I would never buy a rental piece of equipment because you never know what's been done with it. When it's your own you tend to take a little better care of it, not always, but sometimes.
That is truly nasty /w3tcompact/icons/shocked.gif. The hydraulic relief should prevent this type of mishap. As Richard pointed out if the backhoe stops when digging something tough (and stumps are tough), you've got to be patient and dig a little further out... maybe at a different angle until you weaken the object enough to where the power of the backhoe is enough to pull it out. I know that when you're running out of rental time you become impatient cause you want to get that last little job done... been there. /w3tcompact/icons/blush.gif
Judging by how far the rod is extended it looks like the bucket was pretty much curled. Cycling the hoe to the point that it rocks the tractor is NEVER a good idea as it exterts forces on the hoe that the hydraulic relief WILL NOT LIMIT! Disaster is sure to follow. An expensive but fortunately not painful lesson.
Hello Paul,
Lake Quassapaug eh?
Brings back memories from so long ago that I can't remember why I was there. I grew up in Trumbull, CT on a small lake, (Pinewood Lake). Lots of Frogs and Lilly pads.
Tony
There is an amusement park on the lake (smaller family run type) Maybe you went there for a class trip? Quassy is a nice spring fed lake. Good fishing . The lake itself is just under 300 acres. (285 I think)
I believe you are correct. Senior picnic after the prom. That was a very, very long time ago.
Any pics on your web site?
What is the story about the frogs?
Thanks for the memories.
Tony
My first rollercoaster ride (was it called The Mouse?)....paddle boats in the early summer....sunning on the residents beach with my future (now past) wife.....yeah, many a fine memory at Quassy!
Haven't thought about that in quite awhile.
I grew up in Oakville. Are you from Middlebury Paul?
